Tires-What is the shelf life?

If you don't count how many miles you have on your tires, how long can they sit (not in one spot) before the compound they are made of becomes too old to be safe?

I'm thinking 3 or 4 years would be too old to run 160, as an example.

Depends on storage conditions, as in temperature, humidity, etc... Personally I wouldn't really want to push tires over maybe two years old at most.

If things keep going like they have, I'll never have that problem. I'm on my 4th new rear tire since March 11th. I've had 4 in a row get nails in them. Just replaced one again yesterday.

Store tires in a cool, dry, dark and moderately ventilated area. The storage temperature should not vary in an extreme way but keep a level below 25° C / 77° F. Direct contact with pipes and radiators must be avoided. Ozone will accelerate tire aging, therefore do not store tires near electric motors or other equipment, which may produce sparks or other electrical discharges because this produces a higher concentration of ozone. Contact with oil or gasoline may cause contamination of the rubber compound making the tire unsuitable for use. Wipe off any oil or gasoline immediately with a clean rag .

I had tires that lasted 5 years on my Duc's

while I was in Africa. They still worked great until I wore them out

. Of course I rode them every 6 months while back on leave while, and I did store them in a heated/AC garadge and the bikes were up on stands. So, maybe that had something to do with it

I know that after a tire goes through so many heat cycles it hardens. My bud had a set of D208's do it.

they arent gonna dry rot on ya ! if you plan on storing it get them off the floor! if your riding it, dont worry your gonna wear them out way before the compound goes dry lol.ive seen dunlop 207s(5 years sitting )put on track bikes ,and put through heat cycles. and at speed all weekend!!so no worries
