Took the busa for a walk today

My new girlfriend has been dying to go for a ride on the busa, and today was the day. Beautiful weather, nothing on the agenda but having fun.

I swap the seat and rail in for the hump, we saddle up, and off we go for about 100 feet when the engine completely cuts out. As I'm coasting down the street, I hit the starter button - nothing. I turn the ignition off for a couple seconds, back on, no fuel pump sound, starter button does nothing, and the temp gauge goes straight to the top even though the bike was only running for a couple minutes. I check the kill switch, it's in the Run position. Clutch is in, kickstand is up, bike is in neutral, WTF? A few more iterations of that and I decide to push the bike back to my driveway, where I raise the tank to look at the fuel pump wires. Nothing strange there. I turn the key and hear that wonderful fuel pump sound - hit the starter button and she comes back to life. WTF? I wiggled all of the wires I could see while it was running with the tank raised, still running, no cutting out or anything out of the ordinary. So, I shut it down, button it up, and we saddle up again. This time we get about a mile down the road before it cuts out again.

I coast to the side and repeat the tank raising, wire checking, nothing unusual, try it again and it starts back up. We jump on, U-turn and high-tail it back towards the house. About 1/2 mile from home it dies again as I head for the left turn into my neighborhood. I risk life and limb (and girlfriend) pushing it thru a left-turn off a busy street, raise the tank, etc. but this time it stays dead. How impressed my girlfriend must have been with my ability to push a motorcycle 1/2 mile home while she got to carry the helmets and walk home after our "ride"!

And the whole time I was pushing, all I could think was "I never had to push my Harley home"

PS: That last comment wasn't meant as a flame troll, I'm just expressing the irony of today's little letdown.

Tell your girlfriend its a weight safety feature that Suzuki put in place for the sub frame breaking, too much weight on the rear of the bike and its shuts the fuel off.

Yeah thats like saying. Your mother has a nice ass, honey what happened to yours!!

OK now that everybody has told you to lose the girlfriend I won't go there.

If I had to guess I would say you have a kinked fuel line. Everytime you lift the take it allows fuel to enter the line and once you put the tank back down the line kinks again stopping the flow. The bike will run until it uses all the fuel in the line and then dies. Try to see under the tank without lifting it and see what the fuel line is doing. I'll bet that's it.
I hope this helps and it's not the GF'S fault.

With all due respect to the females reading this, she has quite a nice little ass. Worthy of swapping the hump for the rail/pillion seat.

I did suspect that too, but couldn't see any kinking going on. In addition, the problem seems more related to the electrical system, since I can't hear the fuel pump kick on when I turn the ignition on, and the starter doesn't kick over when I hit the starter button. Almost like one of the safety switches (like the kickstand/neutral switch) is triggered.

The bike has less than 1200 miles on it, and I haven't made any modifications yet, so I'll probably just drop it off at the dealer and hope it's a warranty item. But I would like to be sure it's not something I screwed up before I do that.

Any other suggestions, while I study the shop manual?

I had this problem, which started with just 800 miles on the bike and took place intermittently. It only happened when the bike warmed up to a certain temperature. Several trips to the dealer (and a lemon law threat) later, Suzuki replaced the ECU. Turns out there was some sort of problem that only manifested when the ECU got warm enough. Never happened again. And yeah, I did a fair amount of pushing during those months.

what year is the bike?

? Somewhere on here thare's an old thread that talks about this same same problem and the solution... Go back and do a search from the beginning on fuel and it may lead you to it, if those post haven't been lost.

It's an '03 with a little over 1100 miles on it. I did do a search or two, but haven't found a thread yet. Then again, I haven't planted myself in front of the computer for a few days, so my search has been half-hearted. I'll try more...

That sounds like the problem I'm having, although now it won't start at all. I did notice a hesitation twice during a quick ride I took last week, but I figured maybe it just wasn't warmed up or something. A few days later, I did a 300 mile ride with no problems whatsoever. Then Monday, the intermittent crap started. Now as of today, it won't start at all - no fuel pump, no starter. Battery is fully charged, the guages go thru their normal startup routine, then the temp gauge shoots straight up to the top.

I took the tail off and tested the fuel pump relay - it's not getting energized, so I'm thinking the problem is either the ECM, or one of the inputs to it that determines the fuel pump relay output. I have an appointment to bring it to the dealer on Saturday, so we'll see how that goes...

Either the side stand switch, gear indicator thingy. When I put my bike on the side stand and put it in gear and turn the switch on. No pump sound the gauges do the normal thing then the temp gauge goes to the max. It stays there until I take it out of gear or I put the side stand up.

Don't know if that helps but good luck.

I know you weren't trying to bash the Bus, but I would rather push my Busa than ride a Harley!!

Sorry about the problem..

mine stuck like that one time . I used the kill switch to turn the bike off and left it in the off position over the weekend . went to start it and nothing , played with the switch and then it worked
rock.gif
??? don't know what it was but it hasn't happened again . of course i don't use the kill switch often .
