Trailer ramp spring maintenance

I know this isn't exactly "motorcycle" related but is does go around the subject somewhat. Does anyone know of a person with experience in adding tension to the coil spring of the ramp door on a trailer? I've been told that people that work on garage doors have both the experience and tools to maintain this type mechanism. The spring is under a great amount of tension and maintaining is simple but adding tension becomes a safety hazard if done incorrectly.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Yes garage door guys can and will for the most part work on them. On my toyhauler I found keeping the system lubed helps. WATCH those springs. 8 stiches from my screw up.

You are right! I had a tech working on my garage door and when he got to the point that he had to take the springs out, he lost control and the spring shot out and away from him. It came close to breaking his hand, but it just left it pretty bruised and a badly sprained wrist.
