Troy Design Lid Fin is Kickass!

Defectron....I just assumed everyone knew about these beautiful little things.

If your bike store can't get you one, or worse doesn't even know what it even is...TROY LEE DESIGNS...you can call my store, Cycle World (416) 291-9858, ask for accessories, and they'll tell you where to get'em.

They're $30 Cdn, nicely crafted hollow plastic castings that self-glue on to your lid and look like a small shark dorsal.

Just search Troy Lee Designs and you'll get them. They have other helmet stuff, too.

I've seen them and wondered if they would help reduce wind resistance/windload on the head/helmet at high speeds? They look kind of dorky to me but if they are really effective it would be helpful.

You can tell we're running low on topics when a guy posts a topic on lid fins.

But hey, I love mine!

Got a Shoei RF800 in Anthracite (my Busa's black) with a Troy Design fin I painted bright gold.

It makes the ladies faint. And drives Harley drivers to distraction. And makes me feel like Rocket Man (remember that movie?)

Have you noticed that a few Formula Extreme and Superbike riders are wearing them? Why?
Guys in those leagues don't put on decorative stuff if it interferes with their lap times.

On the pack they come in, the manufacturer says stuff like "Purely for aesthetic purposes. No aerodynamic effect claimed or intended."

But you just try looking sideways at 120+ mph and it'll exert a nice little pressure on your neck to look back straight.

These fins want you to look straight.

It was disconcerting at first, but now that I'm used to it, bald helmets feel sloppy in the wind.

Anybody else got one on?

Not quite sure if this is the same thing, but at club meetings over here you will often see the racers with a couple of fins on the lid made to look like ears, the rest of the design is then to make the whole thing look like popular animation characters.

These guys may not be the best racers in the world, but they sure have alot of fun and attract all the lycra girls. :)

Todd, I can't sense that the Troy Lee fin reduces wind resistance, but I feel that it does reduce wind noise.

Maybe it helps guide air down into the partial vacuum behind the helmet and smooths the airstream that way.

Just idle speculation.

I wouldn't buy it for anything beyond its looks. And if you don't like the looks, your decision is real easy.
