Ughhhh...PC Problems

I am trying to help a friend with their pc running xp. For some reason I can not get IE7 to connect, keep getting errors. I have also tried to log on Aol...I can get on aol but it keeps asking me if i want to save to .htm . I can not browse. I have downloaded stinger.exe but it keeps freezing. I have downloaded adaware, but it keeps crashing. I have downloaded spybot s&d and it DID work...cleaned out 300+ files. AVG will not run....It also looks like Mcafee is still on the pc, but i cannot uninstall. I am completely whipped by this pc. I did DL highjack tis and am posting a log. I hope that I am posting in the right area. I can not even DL firefox onto this pc...PLEASE HELP....Thanks in advance....Jay

uninstall ALL of AOL. it has been a crap program for many years, and everyone I remove if from got a working PC. People hate it when I say that, but it sucks and fails and messes everything up. Remove it all together, and see how the machine operates. If they need AOL to go online, tell them to switch to a new ISP

- download/install REGSEEKER. it's never hurt my systems, but dont sue me
- uninstall IE 7, go back to 6 and try.
- it's possible NETWORK settings are messed up
- wipe and reinstall XP. somethings are not worth the time to TRY to fix

It is very difficult to remove all traces of AOL, especially all of the registry entries.

Run MSConfig from Run, then deselect everything in the Startup tab. After you reboot, see if you can run Firefox, then reenable the programs you want or need to run.

Also try cleaning the PC of viruses from Safe Mode.

It'll take awhile, but you'll get it.

Also when did the issue start? what was changed?

You can post your HJ log on any of the many boards where the guys do a lot of these and get some good feedback. As I deal only with network systems, I just reload the client OS when things go bad (faster than fooling around with failed client systems)

The download .htm sounds like a file association is fouled up.

Open My computer > Tools > Folder options > and find the .htm and .html extensions and remove them. You can then re-add them and associate them with Explorer.

You "MAY" be able to restore the system to a previous file set (nothing over 30 days) and repair the system state if you are lucky. System restore is NOT a backup but it can do wonders if something was installed that buggered things up.

What error messages are coming up?

Have you looked at any of the log files to see what errors are recorded there?

you can unload IE7 and reload it with some success.

If this is a network connection issue, you can remove and reinstall tcp/ip

Uninstall and reinstall "network adapters"


Turning everything off in the startup can be problematic too.

IF things are looking glum:
You can also often do a Parallel OS install. reinstall windows to an alternate directory (WinXP for instance) recover any needed data off system and then just dump and reload the OS and software. (back in the W95/W98 days this was an annual event for most)
