Vista HELP safe mode??? what key???

We got a malware virus on the home pc. AVG found it but cannot contain it. I need to get into safe mode for the deeper scan. What key do I hit on the blue startup screen... I tried F2 and F8 and didn't get it... HELP, please

HP, got it, Lavin suggested tapping F8 till it pops up, I was just hitting it once... Whatever we got starts opening multiple copies of explorer as soon as you click it, say 187 times when my daughter tried it today CPU clocking at 100%

Wish I could help. I hate vista! I need to make my printer the admin and it wont let me. I cant print pics or from office.
