Oh sheeze---I hope they at least have phone contact so they know what is going on. There's gotta be boats on that island. I can't see how people wouldn't be fleeing by boat.
I get the impression , it is an isolated island , visited by Volcanologists researchers and tourist charters . The tourists on the island at the time were a group of roughly 100 , some were already back at their ferrying boat , ready to go back to cruise liner . The others , well a fair few , got hit because they were on the volcano , the rest were waiting to be picked up , and weren't going to be for sometime , last I heard last night .
The cruise ship has this Island , promoted as a feature to visit and a chance for those who want to get up close to the old volcano , and the acid lake , and are even supplied with breathing apparatus ....

Oh no . . .

Hopefully
all are well .

How close are you to all of the chaos?
I’m in the South Island, the volcano is a small island 30 miles off the east coast of the north island, so from me about 500 miles as the crow flies.
Not an issue for anyone in the country apart from those poor tourists from that cruise ship that were actually standing on the rim when it blasted

I read the story today. Some of the people who escaped by boat said the water was very hot. It might not have been possible to jump in the water. Most of the people among the injured were burned very severely. Seems like about 13 people are known or presumed dead at this point. I do not think anyone is going to the island to search but they have sent drones around. There was an alert that the chance of an eruption was high.
