Weld a dirt bike kick start lever?

Some good news, bad news, worse news...but could have been worse.
Stopped into the Dealership to have a new tire mounted and oil change....more on this later
A couple co-workers stop in and I learn they are trading a like new dirt bike ( `05 TT125 LES) I end up buying it at a fair price(IMO..$700).
I get the new dirtbike home and see the splined portion of the kick starter is cracked across the top...can this be welded?
A new part cost $130.00 but I know a few very good welders but just wondered if anyone had experience with welding this part w/out distorting it out of shape? I want to repair it before it works loose and damages the splines and shaft.
Back to the BUS...made it 50 miles from the dealer..10 miles from home and the oil light comes on!!:banghead: Thought process..WTH!..10 miles from home..pulled the clutch hit the kill switch and coasted onto the side of the road and watched the last 1/2 qt or so drain out. No oil plug.
Dealer sent a (THE) mechanic with a new plug/gasket and oil, tightened plug up filled w/oil and lit it back off. Sounded ok, he loaded up and took it back to shop, detailed then delivered back home two days later. What a bummer. Rode it 80 miles today and at 40 miles to work, when I stopped/got there I could smell remaining oil burning off..no smell when I got home. I think it`s ok.
I could go on..but..big sigh
.

Yet another example of the blatant incompetence of dealership mechanics... Sorry about your troubles.

most of the time a new guy changes oil, tires, and gives the machine a wash....some are good and most say they know more than they really do. you should walk away from that with no charge...you could have wrecked the bike or worse.

I had those kickers welded before but it needs to be welded right or u take the chance of stripping that spline out..sometimes the kicker lasts but i had one that broke..

imo go on ebay and find another kick starter, ive seen them get stripped out and its instantly alot of work replacing it just for a few dollars

Thanks for the replies...sympathy...
The extended service plan seemed like a fair deal at the time of purchase:whistle:

I called a welder friend (retired, VERY good welder) and he said he would be more than happy to give it a shot.
I`ll check e-bay too.
Thanks again.
