What do you tell him?

My 78 yr old father, a recent widower, bought a 1300R this week. He hasn't ridden a bike in 50 years. I told him I'd rather see him die happy than sit around depressed. Then I saw that these things apparantly can stand up at 170mph and that a slight over turn of the throttle can be serious. He lives in Memphis - where drivers are beyond stupid.

Strange thing is he wants it for touring, not speed. He says he just had to have the "ultimate" for fun. He took an excellent safety course, et. al. That said, what advice would you pass on to him?

stock bike won't do a wheelie at 170 unless you hit a major bump.

just be easy on the throttle until you get the feel of the bike.

Are you serious, 78 and not ridden in 50 years? That means it was the 1950's on probably an old harley with about1/8th horsepower. All I can say is he's in for a surprise.

Tell him to ride like he stole it....

just kidding. The new sport bikes are crazy fast, the most dangerous thing about them is the guy twistin' the throttle. He or she is the one to watch out for

Good or him,,Send him to Illinois this summer and we will be glad to go riding with him...Face it , the Busa is easy to ride, low seat, good controls..

That is how I want to go,,on a bike or by the gunshot of a jealous husband..

I think it just might keep him a little younger and around a little younger. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, in fact he's my hero!

Good for him.
But at 550 lbs with fluids, it isn't the lightest thing around.
Tell him to take it easy until he learns the bikes characteristics.

POCKET FULL OF VIAGRA ! AND HES READY TO GO ! WHEN HE SAID TOURER HE MEANT HE WOULDNT BE RIDING ALONE! JUST BUSTIN , I WANNA SEE PICS !

I would say, that as long as he can understand the impact of the right wrist, the 'Busa *can* be a sweet touring, mellow, smooth, incredible road machine. I'd also pass along the advice of the famed "Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde" experience that resides around 5,000 RPM. Life is too short for regrets, I truly hope, that, at age 78, I'm riding around on whatever at the time (I hope it's a 'Busa) is famed to be "the fastest production bike in the world"......

so the busa's "fun" starts at 5000 rpms? damn, that beat the 9000rpms for my R6. then again, it had a red line that STARTED at 15,500 rpms and went to 20,000! lol.
