What is an intercooler for?

Can someone explain what an intercooler is for. I'm going for an rcc stage one turbo shooting for 250hp or less and I get 50/50 answers that I need an intercooler or that I dont

It cools the air coming from the turbo to the intake, helps air density. Cooler, denser air makes more power at less boost. And it helps stave off detonation.
What does detonation mean. You mean it will overheat and fail?

I got a full billet plenum and intercooler kit ordered for the H2 , thinking this is just adding good insurance . I also look at what the best builders are doing , and I see fellas like @michael parris heuberger are building with every possible thing needed done and more , and then I try to have that similar mind set .

Hi. I know that some one makes an cooler for one.

my try :

the intercooler does what its name suggests - it cools
namely the combustion air supplied to the engine by the turbo (or compressor).

the reason for installing it is:
sheer physics

the cooler the air , sucked in, the more oxygen (O2) it contains

and the more O2 gets into the combustion chamber,
the more fuel can be burned

which leads to more and more performance / hp

that's why there are even intercoolers (in 1/4 or 1/2 mile racing cars) that are filled with ice,
so that the air becomes extremely cold and “binds” a lot of O2.

dear @bigboy
if you have any further questions about the i-cooler´s deeper sense,
go to a special workshop and do a 3-year apprenticeship there.
