What To Wear This Summer

Dear Friends

What inexpensive suit or jacket and pants should I wear this summer in the hot and humid state of Georgia? It's a real sweatbox down here from June through August, and from May through September during midday. Keep in mind that I can't wear standard sizes. I'm six feet tall, weigh 260 pounds, have a thirty-one-inch inseam, and a big ass and thighs.

I strongly prefer something that isn't leather. I hate to think that an innocent animal had to die for me to enjoy my toys. (I don't want to start a debate. If you like leather, more power to you for not being a wuss!)

Without your recommendation, I'd probably ride (carefully) in a T-shirt and shorts.

Some say they'd rather sweat than bleed. Good for some, but if my hobby requires me to sweat or bleed, it's not going to be my hobby for long. I'm looking for a reasonable compromise.

I don't own a single pair of jeans. My father-in-law says I should get some. I don't own jeans because I never found a pair that'd fit my huge thighs.

I plan on getting some Icon Super Duty 3 boots, some Fieldsheer Mach 6 mesh gloves, and a cheap rainsuit (for emergencies). I'd keep on riding in my New Balance walking shoes, but rocks and other debris keep finding their way in there, forcing me to empty both shoes every time I stop. I'm presently using US$0.99 Wal-Mart cotton gloves.

My neighbor, who's a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor, heartily recommends Aerostich motorcycle apparel. I believe the cheapest jacket-and-pant combo I could get from Aerostich would cost around US$750, and that's way, way out of my price range.

It's a good thing that I went ahead and bought the 'Busa on impulse. If I'd figured these additional expenses, I would have backed off.

Thanks for any suggestions you may offer.

Leather jacket.  Leather pants.  Riding boots.  Full face helmet.  And yes, that is what I wear all summer long, even at 105 degrees.

I found my jacket and pants pre-owned and have all of $200 in the set.

I'm sure I'll get flack on this, but I do not wear leather in the summer, I find it too warm. I do however, always wear my Joe Rocket jacket (around $225), with integrated back, shoulder and elbow protection. I find it cooler than leather but still feel protected.

I also always ware my full face helmet, boots and at a minimum, jeans.

I feel for you man. It is a tough decision, but you are limiting yourself. I am one of those that prefers to dress for the fall and be glad when it doesn't happen. I have not always been that way, but experience is a great teacher. Your decision, but if you absolutely cannot wear leather then at least put some mesh gear on. NewEnough.com always has the best deals on gear, so give them a look.

Well no one likes to sweat their tail off but it is going to happen regardless of what gear you have on... Having ridden in AZ most of my life, it is not the riding that is miserable, but the sitting still.. You actually do better with a helmet and gear on when it comes to staying hydrated..

Anyway, what you chose to wear when riding is your own choice.. Just hope it does not come back to haunt you. Me I have seen way too much road rash and busted asses to run without my gear.

So this year I am trying this "underwear" to try and maintain a better level of comfort when the higher heat hits. ... Top

Dear BusaWhipped, jokerjoed, & BigBSBusa

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm interested in that Joe Rocket jacket.

Though I haven't actually placed an order with them yet, I can't say enough good things about New Enough. I've spent more than fifteen hours researching gloves, boots, and other motorcycle apparel from a lot of vendors and find New Enough to have the best prices when shipping is considered. The site's pages load quickly, there are an abundance of large product images, product reviews, and many items have a short review written by a New Enough staffer. New Enough doesn't stock Fieldsheer products, but I really dig the store. It was you guys who turned me on to New Enough, and I sincerely appreciate it.

I have an Icon Mesh jacket. When I first got the bike I also got some Icon jeans with the vent in the crotch. They serve their purpose and kept me cool....but sitting still you will be warm in anything.

For summer I wear a armored mesh jacket and pants; a good pair of shorty gloves with armored knuckles and protection on the fingers and thumb. I always wear a pair of racing boots and a back protector.

Comming from a big guy myself, I went with the Joe Rocket mesh jacket. I am holding off on the leathers until I get down to an acceptable weight that I am happy with. Right now I wear the following and almost all of it runs big especially anything Joe Rocket makes.

Joe Rocket Suzuki Team Textile jacket
Icon Anthem & Recon jeans (both are loose fit and have good room in the leg area)
Icon Field Armor Boots
Short style riding gloves
Scorpion 700 crackhead & GMax GM68 Dragon Helmet

Riding gear is a personal choice and I stand by that choice. It should be left up to the rider. I have seen the outcome of not riding with gear. That and the point that I think everybody on the road where I live takes crazy pills. THAT is the reason why I wear gear.

I wear a Moto GP mesh Jacket, as well as a Kobe leather perforated jacket. You definetly want some protection on, if you ever go down you'll wish you did. And riding gloves, not cotton ones. Ride safe.

Dear Friends

Again, I appreciate your suggestions.

At this point I believe I'm going to go with the Joe Rocket jacket and some textile pants. I realize those things aren't cheap, but if I were to have an accident without having some semi-decent gear, I'd really hate myself.

Jaddie, Please don't ride in shorts and tshirt. I know it gets hot there, my father lives 50 miles south of Macon. It gets hot here in Missouri too. Leather is the best protection you can have , but if it's so hot you wont wear it, get some mesh for the real hot days. +1 on newenough.com, I have bought a ton of gear from them. I think I'm a pretty good rider, with over 45 years experience. Here are some shots of my meeting with an inexperienced DEER last fall. Without gear, I wouldn't be here today.
