My new baby now has over 1000 miles I just got the 600 to 1000 mile service from the stealer and I would like to know what type of oil is best and what interval do you change it? I use Amsoil synthetic in my VL1500. and anything else ya'll might think I need to know...

Oh man...there are about 8 million oil threads on this board

Amsoil is one of the best. Read your
owner's manual...4k is the next scheduled oil change...most owners change their oil between 2000-3000 miles.

You are gonna get a different opinion from every post in a "Oil Thread" just use the Amsoil
and "ride that beast like ya stole it"

Running Amsoil in mine. No problems and I change it every 2000 miles. It looks the same coming out as it did going in. Been told it was a waste to change it with that many miles but to me it is cheap insurance.

I read an article from a chemist that used to be with some oil company in Houston area he said (and this was about motorcycles) considereing most change their oil every 2-3000 miles there is no dif in Dino vs Synthetic oil because they give the same protection up to that point its after that that the synthetics actually show their life, his words are if you feel better about synthetics use them, just spend extra money is all, but dino oil is just fine as long as you change your oil on the sceduled maintenance(a must) his top pics in oil (dino and synthetics no order here either he said it didn't matter) all full synthetics, Castrol GTX, Delo 400, penzoil heavy duty, the cheap stuff at walmart is good oil, his personal fav(for motorcycles) is Shell Rotella T, we use it in our 18 wheelers here where I work
but once again it boils down to you whatever you decide, I use castrol GTX 20-50

That's interesting about the Shell Rotella, I used that in my 1500 for about two years then the local walmart stopped stocking it for some reason so I went with the Amsoil... I sure miss the rotella price 12.00 a gallon for pure synthetic...What a bargan...

There's a new API diesel engine service category named CJ-4 .

Some of these oil will offer very near fake groupIII synthetic performance at much lower cost since the new requirements in part are to have a more oxidation stable formula and a great way to get there is through use of better base oils . Some  , not all of  these will be blends of PAO and group II+ with a tad bit of ester to help the engine seals and additive pack soluability . Other's can or will be built with different base oils to achieve the same goal .

Here's a read on why they changed things up and made a CJ-4 oil . What they don't say here is that oil sump temps will be up in some engines by 50 degrees .

(Over_Easy @ Nov. 01 2006,14:28) Isn't Rotella designed for diesel engines.
Shell Rotella is just a very well made/blend of heavy duty oil (it can be used for anything) we go 15000 miles on our 18 wheelers and that is the scheduled maintenance on them 11 gallons of oil but that oil goes throught the turbos/blowers that heat up to 700 and rise up to 1200 degrees in heavy pulls, and it holds up very well,

but like I said it was an article wrote by a chemist, and its like he said if YOU choose to run synthetic its your choice, but for scheduled maintenance there is no difference, its after 3000 miles that he noticed the dif between the two the dino oil went down hill pretty fast and the synthetics just slowly declined so note to self (change your oil when your supposed to)

I posted the article awhile back went back to try and find it , found the post, tried to find the article it wasn't there anymore dangit it was a good read for sure I copied it off it might be in my pickup, It might be in my old comp I'll see

Let's not forget that m/c motors are also cooled by the oil so synthetic allows the motor to run a tad cooler on those hottest of days.

Thanks for posting this. I remembered reading about an oil filter for the Busa that had a nut on the end, but couldn't remember the manufacture. I think I will use this filter on my next change.
