what's the foam for?

my fuel pump HAD a piece of foam wrapped around it . I'm guessing to protect it from heat ? Anyone know for sure? Anyone riding around without it ? Mine's kinda beat-up ,so I'd just prefer to leave it off . If it's sole purpose is heat protection , I'll make a little asbestos blankie for it.

I guess it's too late, but you want to work around it, remove the pump assembly and then remove the cover.

It is for heat and noise, but anything you make will probably be more effective.

it was tuff to work around it....the pieces were all glued together....anyway.....I'll make something up .

I'm thinking it must vibrate a little without it's blanky.
Wouldn't think it would be that bad though!!!

'01 with about 30k miles. Just for maintanence purposes I added Sea Foam to a full tank of gas (5 oz), idled for a few minutes, and shut off. Didn't have a chance to ride for two weeks. I start the bike with the choke always ON. Usually, the bike starts within 0.5 - 1.0 sec of cranking...
