Where to run

If I what I have read is correct, a de-restricted stock bus should do 192-194 mph. In my opinion, to do this safely requires at least a mile of straight, smooth, flat, empty road. Does anyone know where I can find a road in the Dallas/Fort Worth area? I have heard of people using abandoned air strips, but I don't know where I would find one.

Any tips for doing this, for instance tire pressures, setup, riding position, etc.?

well, you'll need at least 1/3 of that to stop safely (assuming optimal road/tire conditions and perfect braking), so maybe a bit longer would be good...

not to mention the fact that you'll be doing around 281 ft/s when you max out... which is gonna eat up some of your road.

and the fact that a 450 hp turbo 'bus can "only" hit 256 mph in one mile...

definitely want longer than 1 mile for this...

there is a reason that speed record attempts are mostly done on salt flats...

At any rate, be careful!

I have begun to explore the upper limits of the busa. Have only gotten to 152 miles per hour on my bone stock busa.

My stretch of road is at least 2-3 miles....

expat is correct, you need mucho braking distance, plus it will take some time to get up to 195 and some distance of course. So 1 mile is not enough. Not even close, of course unless you pussy out like I did and only made it to 150....

Make sure tires are good..not over inflated.
Make sure chain is good and tension is adjusted....you don't want a chain snapping at 180 plus...it would rip your leg off and kill your bike as well.

tuck tight...and don't come out of the tuck until you are below 80 mph...

oh yeah...test your brakes too

These are only rough estimates so don't hammer me. At 194 you would the terrain would be passing at a foot ball field a second. You would be traveling at 1/3 the speed of a .45 bullet at the muzzle.

It's one of the things that made me want the bus. When I bought it we were supposed to be going to Germany with its Autobahn. That fizzled out. Damn it.

FAVahalik, come on one of my organized (loosely) rides, and I will show you personally, actually if you know the area west of Weatherford, that is where I do it. FM 1885 to be exact, and also on FM 4 north of Palo Pinto. Also you may want to join my local forum, there are several busa owners there and we do get them together for rides when it can happen. Go to THIS LINK and sign on, we are doing a west ride this coming Sat, and a south one on Sunday.

Dr Geekenstein, thanks a bunch. It's just going in for it's 600 mile service, so it's too new yet. I'm going to check out your site. I was hoping someone local would chime in.

Hwy 20 west looked good when I passed that way in 1999 on my old ST1100. I only had it up to 140. I got Smaug up to 170ish (stock speedo, no healer) on Hwy 101 south here in CA.

I've only gotten mine up to around 165 on the autobahn.

It's one thing to be allowed to drive as fast as you want, it's another thing all together to actually find driving conditions that allow it. Ghostrider not withstanding...

It's really rare to find a stretch of 3 lane AB with no traffic and long and straight enough to try...

I know several guys who have taken their 'busas to the limit, but me...

I don't know, I guess the idea of getting intimate with the contents of some stupid/blind/geriatric/homicidal cager's trunk just doesn't do it for me...

And the AB's are full of stupid/blind/geriatric/homicidal cagers....

Texas MILE
and you might want the mod I sell to go faster than 186 like a 99-00 would
I know about what a stock Busa will do with a TRE but how much of it will it do in one mile? If you don't have a TRE, can you hit the 6th gear limiter in a mile? I've only seen about 178 indicated (~160 actual?) before and Ive never tried it from a stop, it's always been a roll on starting from 50 - 80 MPH.

What kind of mods would it take to hit a legitimate 200MPH in a mile?

Come down to Houston.
I know a spot.
Any given Sunday..... Let me know.

yah.. 1 mile is way to short... you gotta figure your gonna cover probably 2 1/2 miles to even get up to that and another 1/2-3/4 mile getting back to a somewhat sane speed.

miles go by pretty fast at 150 plus...

60 mph = 1 mi. per minute
120 mph - 1 mi. 30 sec...
180 mph - 1 mile.. 15-20 sec.. not positive on my math here...

your gonna cover ALOT of territory.

I know i've thought about topping mine out on some of the biggest straights I can find (excluding the interstate.. too much traffic) and what looks like it's forever away starts getting very close before I ever top 170 on the GPS..

if your going by the speedo you could probably do it in a mile though.

dig?

very...hard....to hold a ....camera....at this....speed!

well...the speedo healer's recall button made it a bit easier!

my personal best so far...it was a very long, flat, straight road and a secret place too!

you will need longer then a few miles and if any cars are in sight you will be knocking on their back door quicker then you think. Always good to travel the road first to check for any rubber or road kill and the such before blasting to the limiter. Never try it when there is a intersecting road anywhere on the stretch you attempt it on. Good luck and get ready!!!!
hit the limiter twice and it is interesting to say the least

I don't think you need that much road to get to speed. I have done mine where I live on a shorter road with one small bend and then an uphill straight. The road is a 1/4 mile stretch, then a slight bend, then a 1/4 mile stretch with a slight bend and then an up hill straight. I normally hit the first sraight around 120 and hold it open till the speedo passes an indicated 180mph. Never had it hitting the limiter in 6th though. Slowing down is what really takes all the road. I generally sit up around 120 and flare my legs out as well as using the brakes. Slows down pretty well but still scary in such a short distance.

what was the scariest thing about that run?...I still have the oem tires and stock chain in place.
wow.gif

btw....this road was some 5 to 7 miles long....it was wierd how straight it was....just laying there for all four of our busas to rip up....even being the slowest busa...I motored slowly but surely past the 1000RR and it's 90lb (he MIGHT weigh that much soaking wet) rider.

I have been working on a nice but short section south of you, in Beaumont Texas. Its a clean streach about 1.2 miles long. So far I have made it up to 175 mph indicated (not GPS) and still have some room to work. I was going to try and hit the limiter today but there was some trafic in the area and had to stop the run. I would love to find a 2 or 3 mile streach to work on. I also visit Flower Mound Texas twice a month. And I think west of Forth Worth on I-20 looks like it could be a nice place to make a few high speed runs.:O

It has been my experience that if you redline each gear at WOT it takes a little less time to get up to ridiculous speeds, rather than short shifting to 2nd/3rd. Just my .02
BTW anyone that lives in or travels thru Southern Illinois, I got a spot.
