Who can help with St. George, Utah?

I have been out looking for a change of scenery in my life. Both living and working scenery. Job market isn't as strong as I keep hearing. At least I didn't think it was. My goal was to move to a different part of the country and yet like what I did for a living. For some reason that combination came hard to come by. I was offered a position in Oklahoma City and while taking that under consideration, I have been offered a job with a firm in St. George, Utah.

OK I will first admit I was hoping to get to like Salt Lake City area. I always liked the climate and the stark difference in landscaping to the deep south and Fla. Applied all over SLC to no avail. But this St. George Co. kind of came on strong and I nibbled at it. And they made a pretty good first offer and I countered and we are negotiating the total compensation part. They are flying me out the 12th, purposely on a Friday, so I can take the weekend to look around on my own. Then they have a transition team to help me with where to live, and the area questions that I will meet Monday and then Tuesday and Wednesday they as they put it "Want to seal this deal". I have done my Due Diligence, they are sitting on a boat load of cash and they are set to grow about 400% over the next 5-6 years. They can afford me.

So I can look online and see what the Demographics look like, see pictures, look at houses etc. But that really doesn't help me with a "feel" for the place. It is smallish, 75% Mormon, 4th fastest growing area in the nation, close to a lot of Top Notch scenery, etc.

But I don't see that it has much culture, much in the way of music, dining, etc. I don't know if a Non-Mormon/Non Religious guy is going to be a pariah there or what? Vegas is 2 hours south. So I can get to fun of that type on any weekend I want. But I still have to spend most of my time living and working there.

Anybody know anything about St. George past what I can find on the net.

I know little of that side of Utah. but I can tell you, most Mormon towns fold up and close at 10pm.

I live in the Salt Lake area, moving here in 2011 after 25 years in Florida. Utah is a beautiful part of the country and the Mormon/LDS majority is not difficult to deal with. We have found them to be friendly and accepting of our beliefs. It is true most of the smaller municipals close up early. The state controls the alcohol pretty rigorous, state stores for liquor and wine. St. George is a draw for folks from all parts of Utah. Lots of activities and festivals in and around St. George. It does get hot in the summer, after all it is desert. 100F+ is normal. Lots of beautiful parks, both national and state entities. Moab is close by and that is a major tourist mecca for outdoor activities. If you can deal with government that is extremely conservative(R), almost to a fault, run mostly by the predominant religion, and realize the majority of Utahns are LDS, it's not a bad place to live. Another thing to know, even LDS from outside of Utah that relocate here admit the local LDS are kinda extreme sometimes. I don't want to scare you away but you have to be aware that the culture is strong towards LDS beliefs.

Move to St George, Stay out of okyhoma, Salt lake city, Provo. St George is a nice area, And close to so many other areas. Don't worry about the Mormons there.

Sounds like you already have made your decision to me.

I personally would not live in tornado alley if you paid me, Sorry Cap. :banghead: Although this has been a very light year for them - so far.

I wasn't all that excited about OKC. But I knew less about St. George at the start of this thread. The scenery is supposed to be jaw droppingly gorgeous through there. Miles of places to ride the Busa to every weekend for a year and never see the same thing twice.

It is a beautiful place to live and ride. Lots of nice golf
courses too, if you play the game.

Holy Crap. So I get a call on Tuesday saying that they were going to need to change plans. The rains that hit the area washed out the interstate between Las Vegas and St. George. Which until this call meant nothing to me

So the travel girl "Amy" calls me and says Mr. Gibbs we are gonna need to change your travel arrangements. Since you can't drive in from Vegas we are going to re-route you to Salt Lake City Thursday and our plane will land enroute from Seattle and wait for you there, and take you the rest of the way to St. George.

So I'm like......Hmmmmmmm....OK. So I land in SLC at like 9:15 last night. Pitch black. Get my bags. I'm thinking this is gonna be REALLY bad or REALLY good. Waited.

Sure as crap they page me to come to the ground transport area. There was this van waiting for me to take me to the General Aviation FBO, where a Pilatus PC-12 was waiting. Got into St. George in like an hour or so.

Hell I met the guy who interviewed my by phone on the plane.

He said get some rest we will meet you for lunch and go from there tomorrow.

I'm liking these guys already.

The PC-12 is a really nice ride. Almost as great as a Busa.

Good luck tomorrow. Sounds like you're on to something good.

I left my freaking chord to my camera so I can't download pics. Man there are MILES of roads here that are made for Busa's. I better get all my POPO electronics up to date.

Posted speed limit is 80. Nobody does it. That's like the minimum. I have no idea what ticket territory is here. GREAT roads as far as surface quality. Miles and miles of them.

Elevation here is like 3000 feet. Its like 20* cooler here than down in the lowlands. The house I like has a 4 car garage with A/C. Both of those were a surprise!!!!!

Interviews went well. They acted like I was getting the job. 6 hours worth of interviews. But they admitted they had 2 more to interview this week. Said they would decide by end of this coming week. Then my perspective new boss, handed me a card and said, go where you want, eat anything you want, do anything you like this weekend. Don't worry about what you spend. Leave the card at the hotel and they will get it back to us. I'm POSITIVE this was a test to see if I would screw up and go to Vegas or something. Their isn't any strip clubs or anything here. But some hella good steaks.

Fly home to the swamp tomorrow.

I agree it could have been a test - maybe the other guys they were going to interview got told the same thing and they will
partly decided where you went and what you spent as to who gets the job.
Someone that didn't spend anything MIGHT have the advantage? in that they didn't take advantage of the company?

Well if you want the job I hope you get it and I'm sure you will let us know.

Looks like a pretty nice area to live.

Can't remember how to upload pics. So for now I give up on that. But I got confirmation today that my references have checked out and verified. So at least I am still in the hunt. I know they are interviewing others, but if they are checking references that says I'm still moving forward. If they found someone they liked better, they wouldn't be checking my references.

I don't want to get too far ahead of things, but certainly not bad news!!

Alright I was told when I went out there that they would make a decision in like a week.

So at the end of that coming week I get an e-mail from my perspective's new boss's admin saying Simon has been out sick and to just let me know that he has been out for 6 days and that it would set things back until he got back. OK so that was 2 weeks ago. I have not heard a word since then. No, "We made a decision and you aren't it", or "Give us another week or" "We have chosen a different candidate" etc. Nada. So at what point do you discuss etiquette at this point? I mean how long before I just say OK they obviously made a choice and it wasn't me? When I was hiring people, I always had a back up person that could fill in if I were sick. Or I always at least gave the candidate closure. They spent a good bit of money and time getting me out there. I would not figure them to simply blow me off after all that effort, and never say a word to close it.

I mean the guy could be really ill and the company is holding their breath about him and forgetting things like this. IDK. But after 3 weeks I feel like they are not very professional if they can't close this deal.

I guess if you called them and asked How's Simon doing - that might send two messages.

That you cared and were still interested in the job.

So I did this today. Was told "We still were impressed with you but at this time have decided to go "In a different direction". What that means is I didn't get the job. OK Fine. Dang boys how long would you have waited to shut me down had I not called? Just be honest and say you chose someone else.

Sucks but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
They say when one doors shuts another one opens........
