Who cut their stock exhaust at the midpipe?

Hi, I remember reading a thread or two about 1 or 2 people who cut their exhausts at the midpipe. The cut was right behind the driver footpegs.

Anybody got a link to the (those) threads? I have no idea how to phrase it in the search field and when I put "cut mid pipe, or ""cut exhaust" it's only returning topics up till december (I don't know when this topic was posted, but it was further back than that). I guess the search option is limited to return 10 pages, and I don't know how to make it search further. So linky?

And if whoever did it is still around....are you still runinng that way? Were you able to tune your bike with a pcrIII? Did you do the pair mod? How much did the cops harrass you (due to the fact that I'm sure it was MUCH louder than usual)?

I don't know if I would want to do that...but it sure seems like a cheaper solution than buying an aftermarket exhaust(for the moment, in time I'll get one, I just want a cheap(free) solution right now). I would like to learn more.

Way back when I first got my busa I wanted something just the same, so I Cut my factory cans , then gutted them, shortend them 4 inches and put the two peices back together, didnt have power commander or nothing, run just fine,

jay, why dont you wait for some time and get a pair a boltons... just a suggestion though

Yeah Thrasherfox did that exhaust mod and it doesn't sound as loud as you might think. Give him a PM, maybe he can load up a sound bite.

He's not running a PC or any other engine mods and I don't think he has had any problems with the po po. I went riding with him two weeks ago, just do a search under Exhaust Mod or PM him.

cool, thanks guys

shenoyp....yeah I really don't wanna put ANY money into the exhaust at all. Not even a pair of slipons. I may be wishy-washy with what I want to do with a few parts of my bike....but the one thing I have my HEART SET ON is getting a turbo w/a dump pipe. So...I really don't want to waste any money on an exhaust....and if I can just cut my cans for free for now...that would make me happy. (I love the look of no-cans, I'm just scared with how it will run and how the cops will feel about it.)

I'll have to PM thrasher.

I figured I would post it here instead of PM'ing in case anyone else was interested as you had mentioned.

My mod is as follows:

I mentioned 1 foot, but that was a real rough generalization, they are actually a little shorter than a foot.

With pipes ON bike and mounted follow down the pipes to where there is like a small grove, more like a restriction, then on the other side of the restriction it expands just a little and that is the end that mount on the headers.

Measure from the grove up the pipe.

On the bottom side, measure up 6 inches, makes sure to use a indelible ink marker and make a mark dead center on the bottom of the pipe

On the top side, measure up 9 inches and mark dead center on the top of the pipe.

That is your angle, going from 9 inches to 6 inches

After I made the measurements on both sides I took the pipes off, and by hand made a careful line to follow from the top marker to the bottom mark.

I then used my sawzall with a high tooth metal cutting blade to make the cut.

And I think it is best to turn the pipe upside down in a vise and cut from the bottom end to the top. (I.E. you will be physically cutting downward at an angle due to the pipe being in the vice upside down, but your cut will actually be starting at the bottom (at the 6 inch mark) and going upward towards the 9 inch mark.

Left and right pipes need to be measured individually to ensure each as the proper look. Left and right pipes mount on to the header just a little differently. If you try to look at the left pipe and determine your markings by the welds it won't turn out right.

Nope, sorry to say, haven’t mapped it yet, have not had a spare $300.00 to get one.. anyone want to donate a PCIIIr to me?

Nope, didn’t do the pare valve mod. It seems to be running fine as it is with no other mods, I did not want to do the pare valve mod until I have the PCIIIr in hand and ready to install at the same time (again, like I said, it has been running fine with no other mods, don’t want to mess with a good thing)

I didn’t do anything with the fire blanket, I figured if it stayed in, it stayed in, if it didn’t, it didn’t. And it didn’t.. no harm no foul, no problems

As far as the loudness.. As BA Busa said, it is not as loud as you think. I think it might be as loud as a Busa will get unless you install some kind of pipes that are built with an echo chamber, but look at it this way. Most Harleys (or at least the ones I have seen) are doing nothing more than running straight pipes off the engine. And I believe they have just two cylinders instead of 4, larger explosion, more intense, greater, deeper sound.

So while my Busa is louder than stock and probably louder than most Busa's with cans, I think most Harley's are still going to be louder than mine.

So I get looks, and it is noticeable, but I think on a day to day basis it is not something I am going to get messed with about.

The only time I have EVER had a police officer look at me was a few weeks ago when BA BUSA and I were riding up to Yosemite, we drove through a town and on the side of the road were a few Sheriffs and a few CHP. Rich and I were stopped at a light and when we took off I kind of reved it a little and one of the Sherifs heard my bike which caught his attention and looked at me. But that is the ONLY time I have even had an officer even look in my direction (as far as I know).

I have actually had Harley people come up to me and tell me my Busa sounds bad a$$ for a rice burner.

But the key phrase was "for a rice burner"

It is deep enough and loud enough that I get respect often from the Harley crowd and if not respect, they will at least turn their heads with a WTF look on their face lol

As far as how it runs. I think it runs good, ask BA BUSA, we made a couple of runs that were in excess of 100+

I have not noticed ANY performance degradation whatsoever

Whatchya think Rich.. was it running ok?

I have a set of stock pipes however, so if I get a ticket, it should be just a fix it ticket, put the stock ones on, get it signed off, good to go

Hope this long winded, drawn out reply helps.

Good luck

AWESOME brotha....just what I was lookin for! Thanks for the info!!!!! It sounds like this is something I wanna try. Best part is the price....free! Yippee!

The only thing I got confused on was the above sentence. "And it didn't" sounds like the fire blanket fell out. Wasn't that what was acting to muffle the sound? Did it get louder when it fell out?

Yes, what was left of the fire blanket fell out

There was very little fire blanket left in there anyway. Most definitely not enough to make a difference in the sounds

Awesome I was wanting to do a similar mod before. I took off one exhaust and cranked it up and it sounded goodl. I heard that running only header would 'burn up' valves so I never thought to do it again until I read this thread.
Although I can't find the thread I remember a member here actually re-constructing the factory exhaust and making holes inside/ as I remember. Either one I'd think about doing

I have pcUSB, pair block off plates (not installed) and I am thinking about doing the small box mod (but afraid of losing low end torque and not sure of the improvement to top end would make up for it?)

I have not checked prices yet but what 'average' prices you guys pay to get a dyno done? and tuning done? So I can plan this thing out :-)

His bike does have a unique sound, but it performs just like any other stock Busa
