Just showing my ignorance in the hope that someone won't crash because of cold temps affects on tires. Just got a Metzler rear and on three different days recently I had trouble when going from first to second gear. The first time I wondered if my bike was cold and the clutch actually slipped, the second time the bike was warm and the bike hooked up prior to me getting out of the throttle, the third time, as usual for this weather I gave the bike around 5 minutes warm up in the garage; proceeded down the drive, hit the road and then second gear and the azz went to the ditch. No more questions, the tire broke loose when going into second. Then it dawned on me that the tire must be harder in this cold weather. Take care fellow

This bike generates an azz of torque.

I was just debating posting a thread about this.

My first winter on the bike- experienced riders, how much do you back off when it's 30-40 degrees? I mean, if you go around a corner at 70 when it's hot, do you do 60 when it's cold? How much do you have to back off?

after riding for about 5 or 6 miles the tires get warm and hold okay....but even then i would not take a chance of going too crazy too fast....just ease into it...

Hey Dadof3 .....what are you talking about .....we live in South Carolina ....what winter ?

Man I went out today and everybody was calling me crazy. I asked one guy and he said mid 30's, this was at noon. Saw deep freeze on tube tonight. Never fails I catch a weekend off and it's either raining or cold as heck.

)... and when we were returning it to the owner, we were out front...  everyone in his cul-de-sac rides (age 30-40), and since he never brings his bike out the whole neighborhood came out to see. so they all pulled bikes out, a bimmer 1200, a zx-12, a zzr12, and one i'm missing. after bs-ing for a while, we were about to leave- they were going riding, i was going home, but leaving with them.. we were about to ride off (i was last in line), and the third rider on his zx-12 raced out the cul-de-sac, and as he got out of the 'bulb' of it, he hit a little steel plate in the road... on cold tires at a lean, under accelleration.. needless to say he went down in a bath of sparks and smoke.. we all ran up there to check on him, after some policework, we established he hit that little steel plate.. he lowsided to the left, and his back tire hit the curb HARD, throwing the bike around, kinda high-siding it in a way, and landed on its right side.. his helmet cracked on the edge of the curb, shield broke and flew off, and got a rip in his jacket.. he was cool though, bike was bashed. sliders broke off, right side fairings cracked, all his oil leaked out, brake pedal broke off, pipe scarred up... so we all cleaned up the oil, helped him get his bike up the st into his garage, and of course, canceled the ride.  hate to see anyone go down at any speed.. even tho he was only at like 30, was under accelleration, so it was pretty bad sight. coulda been worse though.

sorry so long......... just goes to show what can happen at even slow speed on a cold tire/cold street (was like 45 out)...

im mid 30 weather here on the east coast... ya the tires might warm up but the street is still dead cold... its not like a warm tire and a hott street to raise traction....
cheers

(heavybusa @ Dec. 09 2006,09:39) If the temp is less than 70 Heavy is a NOOOOO show!!!!
I used to ride with a guy like that. I'll stop around 35 or so. I just put mine up yesterday. I might break it back out at the end of this week. It's supposed to be in the 60's

heck it was 26 here yesterday in DFW, i rode in. just get good gear.
neck gaiter, good gloves, leather jacket & lined jeans. i try & ride all the time unless its raining(roads are wet) dont trust wet roads anymore...

Even though the tires are warm the street is still cold! So just take it easy when riding in the winter time. I wouldn't push it. I would just relax an enjoy the ride.

Brrrrrr!
I rode in to work this morning at 27 degrees. A little nippy but the temp in the afternoon is supposed to be in the 60's all week

..........

Absolutely slow down / take it easy when the streets are cold fellas.

I’ve dropped the tire pressure down a few lbs to 39 and it seems to improve traction when the temp is below 45.

Lowering the tire pressure isn't a bad idea but you still have to be careful. Our ride this past weekend would have been in the twisties but be decided that with the cold roads, it isn't worth it.

You also have to watch for black ice. Well, watch for it all you want but you can't see it. And it kills motorcycles AND cars.

If you're in a mountain riding roads which get a lot of shade during the day, they may never warm up past freezing all day. Even in the afternoon, if there are shady spots, they may have black ice on the surface all day long.

Just have to be smart. Telling you how fast to take a turn on a cold surface is probably not possible. Personally, I go about half speed, but that's just me and it isn't good enough for all road surfaces, to be sure.
