wrapped header

due to the fact i've participated in a few cruises; i.e., woodward cruise, gratiot cruise, harper cruise, etc., and always run into overheating problems, i decided to take a couple hours this winter and try to reduce radiator temperature, seeings how the rad sits so close to the header, and wrap 'em. about 1.75 hrs and this is what i got.

p.s. the black graphite wrap is MESSY....wear gloves!!!!!!

might wanna think bout takin that off unless u like replacin headers. I wrapped the header on my sunfire couple years ago and it only lasted a year. Yeah it does keep heat away from other components but it also keeps heat INSIDE the pipes deteriating them quickly

yeah, agreed.....if you have cheap headers. that will not happen with SS. i wrapped my SS headers in my old monte and had it for about 4 years before the car fell apart and never had a problem. HOWEVER; i did try the same thing with a set of standard Hedmann headers in my Z-28 and they lasted about 8 months. time will tell ya know. IF it does happen, i'll have to try something else. but thanks for the input.

you can "over wrap" the pipes.. you only want about a 1/2" overlap on on the wrap.. I have had mine wrapped for maybe 15K without any issues at all.. I only wrapped the first 14"

Cheap pipes or Titanium will not last long.. I have not heard of any complaints from other guys about premature burnout.. (factory pipes are cheap anyway) and you will find great heat reduction out the vents.. not sure you are going to cure any "overheating" issues however..

got between 1/4 and 1/2", depending on the bend. the only reason I wrapped 'em all the way down is to aid in scavenging the exhaust.

Technically you gain some power but not so sure the effect is actually from the scavenging (header design/tube length dictates that) but from keeping the gasses hot (less dense and easier to push out).. We never ran comparisons on the dyno wrapped or unwrapped but ET's really never showed anything dramatic I know.. We wrapped the pipes so that we could get the machine recycled for the next round quicker without getting burned.. :)

Stepped primary tubes are another item that work along side this wrap pretty nicely..

never had a problem with wrapped pipes. Stock, SS, and even Ti.
Titanium is not a good idea to wrap.. it becomes brittle and will fail in time.. (and for what replacement costs, forget that).. wrapped pipes become almost transparent looking on hard long runs.. you can see the exhaust going through the pipe as the heat waves travel down the length..

after say >60k miles with a full wrapped Ti system I've never had any brittleness or failures. Yes, I did have some discoloration but nothing else.

Maybe I was just lucky. Maybe it's the quality of the Akra system. Maybe the Ti myth is just that. Of course this is on ly in reference to hayabusa exhausts. I'm sure the conditions are vastly different under the hood of one of those machines with to many wheels on it (4 wheels).

This coating seems to accomplish the same thing as wrapping your headers:
JET-HOT Coatings Motorcycle Page

"Pipes that will not turn Blue or Gold
Lower Temperatures
Increased Horsepower
An Unbeatable Warranty
Many Colors to Choose From
"
I have used JetHot on hundreds of manifolds over the years.. show cars love it as pipes do not color and it helps protect the underhood from some of the heat.. great stuff..(and durable).. An absolute necessity on the headers of the nitro motors

PLus one. Jet hot headers and dump pipes.

Been wrapped a while too, no problems yet. :beerchug:

Although the last pic shows wrapped, one or two dips in the road on a lowered bike chewed that right up. Now it's just wrapped down the down tubes.

One thing that I found interesting, is that my 'black wrap' is now white. Don't know if the graphite washed off or if it was from the heat.

Can you use JetHot on titanium?
