Wrecked Busa.....

I'm a newbie to Busa's but not a newbie to sportbikes by far.I'm 42 yrs old and I've been riding/tinkering with bikes since the age of 12.I've owned a 94 GSXR-1100,96 ZX7r,99 ZX9r and half a fleet of older cruisers of all makes and models that half you guys couldn't even relate to (that's no insult). The only bike I ever purchased brand spanking new was the 94 GSXR-11 which was by far the best slingshot I ever owned.I'm pretty much a shadetree weekend bike mechanic.Anyways,I'll be checking out a wrecked 00 Busa this week (asking price is $4000.00) and need a little help.I was hoping someone could take a measurement  from the L&R side of their front axle to the center front edge of both L&R Cowlings and let me know what the numbers are.I was thinking this might be a simple way to tell if the front end has been tweaked/tucked a tadd. The bike is showing less than 800 miles and went down on it's right side but all plastic is still on the bike and from what I can see in the pics the seller sent me the damage is minimal. It will be needing an upper, right cowling, right engine case and right muffler and a few other small things. Also, the seller, who is not the original owner says the motor will turn over but he has not run it do to not knowing what damage** if any** might be inside the right engine casing. He did send me quite a few pics showing the damage and all checks out so far even though I have a little doubt about the original mileage.I was hoping you guys might give me a few tips to aide me in my decision about purchasing this project bike.

Problem with buying a wrecked bike is the engine..Can he verify that the engine did not run on its side? This can starve vital componentes from engine oil...Not good in the long term,,,

That is one of my major concerns. Is it possible for that right side engine case to crack without losing any oil and starving the engine???

Check out these crash pics. My friend laid it down doing 25-30mph on a tight corner and the bike slid 30ft. The little hole on the engine case clutch cover leaked a little oil, but we never noticied a drop in oil level(via the sight guage) even after he rode it home for at least 2 hrs. The cover was a snap to replace, didn't even lose any oil with the bike on its kickstand. Just something you can compare the damage to anyway.

This Busa has the hole in the same part of the right fairing as your buddies.Looking at the pics I have it also appears to have been a low speed crash which is why I'm interested the bike. But as mentioned if that motor wasn't shut down in time it could eventually cost me a few more pretty pennies in the near future.

So long as there was not a significant loss of oil. When I went down in Palomar I lost a little oil, wasn't that big of a deal. Big runs as strong as ever.

I dunno about you guys...but I would never buy any vehicle that has been wrecked! I believe its a bad omen... but thats just my superstition!

I'm not a believer of superstition. As for never buying a wrecked bike,I've been around long enough to know for fact there's many of bikes that have been wrecked and carefully put back togeather then sold as **pampered & never wrecked**etc.....In most cases the buyer never even knows not unless the seller states it before the sale.

Well for starters take a survery of all the damage and do some price checking i've done a fair amount of picking up wrecked bikes to fix and then i ride them and sell them after awhile i hardley ever get a Busa though just for the simple fact people think the wrecked one is worth so much by the time you by the bike and then get alll the parts for it and install them you can sometimes buy your self a nice used bike for the same money gets kinda ridiculas if you ask me. and i'm not one that dose this for major profit i usualy try and get a bike and put it together and ride it for part of the year or a year and try to at least get what i put into it outta it if not make about 200 bucks.

But i ususally buy nothing unless i know the motor is either in good working order or runs and with No frame damge usually your ok with them.

With the kinda lay down your talking this bike did i doubt it will be any tweaking but i will take some measurements on my bike today and let you know

Gerald, How far away is the bike from you? We also have busa buddy's all over and many have offered to check out bikes for each other...

**Update**......Just letting you guys know that I called the seller on the day we agreed to meet and his story was the bike had been taken to a shop out in Western Maryland which is about 3 hours from me....This deal has too many loop holes so I think I'll pass and just keep looking.

I've bought and restored many bikes over the years, and my only rule is I have to hear it run and be able to shift it through the gears.....all you have to do is short shift and make sure all gears engage, no need to be street legal...a parking lot ect will work. And if somebody can't/won't take the time to make it run for you.......consider it scrap and hammer them way down on the price or help them get it running enough to check out....and still make sure they bring the price down for your effort. If you can't hear it run the only other option would be to compression test it.....stick a battery in there and make sure it turns over fine...stick it in every gear and rock it back and forth real good...listen for anything funny. Trannies will be the number one danger spot on used bikes....they get hammered bigtime. If you can take the plastic off or its already off you should be able to see any frame/fork damage by sighting along it from diff angles. Be sure and check the swingarm too....they like to bend as much or more than forks....and you won't feel it till you hit a corner...then it'll get all kinds of squirrely. Hope this helps and good luck

So you're saying that if you wanted a bike, and a buyer disclosed to you that he had an accident on it, but you know that nothing is wrong with it, you still woulndt buy or ride it?
Yup ... but thats just my preference! I generally dont buy used motorcycles or cars...

Dont have a problem with someone else buying a used vehicle... so get me wrong!
