Yes, I suck...another HID help question. Low shuts off upon start up

So I got me a set of DDM Tuning HID's, both 35K versions, for Hi/Lo.

They both light-up fine when the bike is not running, but when I start the bike up, the Lo goes out. Sometimes it will light up if I kill the bike and start it back up, sometimes it doesn't. Hi works fine.

Installation went smoothly, battery is new...not sure what the issue is.

If DDM Tuning is crap stuff (I know it's Chinese made), can someone recommend a more quality brand?

Thanks.

I had the same thing happen with my DDM kit, although it was on the high beam. It was the ballast (flat rectangular piece) which I had replaced and all has been good for 2 years.

What he said, swap ballist.. if its the ballist then wait another 3 months for parts from DDM. de boat de boat boss I see de boat!

I'll swap them when I get home and see what the results are.

Also, I just saw the Pinned thread about installing a relay timer, perhaps that will help the cause.

And FWIW...my experience with DDM has been good, I ordered and was delivered with a couple of weeks...direct shipped from probably the factoty in China. Some of the connectors suck ass though, need to use zip-ties to keep some of them together.

My HID's do the same thing, sometimes after its been sitting for a while or it doesnt turn over strong the low wont come on or I will have to shut it off and crank it again. Them HID's suck alot of juice when you 1st start it up. Best advice is install a delay or just put in a manual switch to flick your lights on after your bike starts up.

I had the same aggravating problem on my '06 install. I want to say by memory if I turned the key to on and waited about 10 seconds it would come back up after starting the bike. The Gen I needs help if you ride at night.

Thanks for the tip!!!

It worked. On my commute home, prior to firing it up, I turned the ignition ON for approximately 10 secs or so, than fired it up and the light stayed on. So I'm assuming the delay prior to hitting the starter is allowing enough time for the electrical system fully charge up before getting sucked down by starter and HID system....maybe? I don't know.

Thanks again.

there are a few things to consider here to avaid HID problems:
the goofy wait to start the bike so that the HID's dont take a hit.
1. while sitting on the bike and kick stand up/bike in neutral and cut off switch to run; press the start button
2. turn the key to on (notice that the lights wont come on)
3. Pull the clutch lever and the bike will start, once you let the start button go, the lights will come on

or
1. put a switch on the ground side of the ballast and problem solved. however.. you will need to remember to start the light before u run off.. much cleaner and it really takes like 5 mins.. PS if you place the switch on the left side you will be able to turn it on/off while on the throttle...

No need for a Timer relay, but just a SPDT relay and interrupt the head light during start

Would you have a diagram handy how-to wire up the relay to interrupt the headlight till after bike starts, I have same issue with my 04, just normally give 10 or so secs before I start it.
