Yosh exhaust and k and N questions

I was down at a local motorcycle shop, for all of you from Carbondale IL area.....Phillips Pro Cycle. They told me that a K &N air filter and a Yosh RS-3 full exhaust actually slow the bike down in the quarter. I usually believe what they say because they do test most of the products they sell but that just sounds a little funny. I didn't ask if they tested seperately or together or if they had a power commander. But what does everybody think of this??? I'm kinda holding the BS Flag up right now. Let me know

Never heard nothing like that

Anyone is welcome to correct me, but from what I have noticed on a few dyno graphs is that sometimes exhaust mods and intake path mods can result in higher top end HP while losing some low end torque.
Wether this is a result of poor/no retuning I don't know.
Maybe a shift or loss in the torque curve might cause a higher 1/4 time??? Just a guess

A friend once told me HP is how fast you can go and torque is how fast you get there. Dont know true this is.

I think how fast you get there is hp and tq. tq is how fast you get going and hp is how fast you can go

i think i just said the same thing you said

What about if you have a Powercommander and get it mapped with the Yosh and the K&N? I would think fuel injection optimization to fit the new exhaust and air filter would improve the 1/4 times.

I have a full Yosh with K&N on my 01, pair tubes removed, pc2.. runs great with the right map and a little fine tuning.. If it slowed it down cant tell it, any faster would be SICK

Ask'em to prove it!  Otherwise its all talk, besides 95% of the 1/4 time is rider not bike.

Ya I would have to say that just using the exhuaust and K&N filter would hinder the low end abit.Because our Hayabusas have been factory tuned with the stock setup not with a yosh or K&n filter.Thats why its a must to run a Power Commander and get it mapped to your liking. Just my thoughts.

I have that combo and never noticed a decline but then again I only ran the 1/4 once when the bike was new and still stock.

Yeah I don't think they took re-mapping into consideration when going to a full exhaust.

IT HOLDS TRUE WITH BIKES OR CARS IF U CHANGE CAM, CARBS (N/A THIS CASE) OR PIPE YOU WILL NEED TO CHANGE THE GEAR TO MATCH. 1/4 = 16F 41R 1/8 = 16F 41-45R OR WHAT WORKS FOR ME 17F 48 ALUMINUM REAR (TAIL OF THE DRAGON AND 1/8 MILE)

Man,,,,,,,,,,,Someone has told you some bad information, If you change a cam, carb, or pipe in a car or bike you dont need to change the gears. I thought I heard it all.

It would probably appropriate to say their tell you info based on "not completely accurate" test data, or a bad setup.

BTW. I have always been taught that TQ is the amount of force exerted an any point in time, and HP is force exerted over an amount of time.

Was I taught incorrectly?

Changing to a full exhaust will not be fully felt without a Power Commander. Pair mod, Full RS-3 and K & N will add 15hp and a lot faster.

Crazzycowboy your right you don’t need to change the gearing if u change the cams, pipe or port and polish the heads. But if u don’t u will be reading someone’s lic plate that reads URLUZN.  Any one that’s been around racing knows you don’t just build a motor and go racing; you also set up the bike to match the mods.  Say you get a new yosh & K N you may gain 5 -7 HP but I don’t think u will see that between 5000 - 8000 rpm.  When u start your 1/4 mile run the time u spend under 8000 rpm the new parts will not do u any good (it may even hurt your time as the local motorcycle shop from Carbondale IL area.....Phillips Pro Cycle stated).  Drop 1 tooth in front and u will get to what some call the power band sooner and by doing this your times will get better.  YOU WILL NOT SEE THE PLATE URLUZN AS OFTEN!!!  (this will help the 60 ft time most and we know most races are won or lost in the first 60 ft)

i raced cars for a long time if you want to know for sure if your horsepower went up besides dyno you can tell by the mile per hour at the end of the quarter mile.
more mph = more horsepower
lets just say that before mods your quarter mile mph was 140 and after mods your quarter mile mph is 145 you definitely picked up some more horses regardless of your e.t. and yes your e.t. is affected by gearing. you can also check your best possible e.t. by using a calculator you put 1320 which is 1/4 mile in feet and divide by your mph it will give you the best possible e.t. your bike can run with what you got.  its very hard for normal street vehicles to use 100 percent of available horsepower due to tire slipage and gearing but if you get everything right you can get close.
this is the easiest way to check if you have gained horsepower.

Can't see a K&N filter slowing the bike down,or helping it breath a little better either.Yeah, to exploit the full potential of a full system, you need a PC and a descent map, but I ran my HMF's for about a 2 hours before installing the PC,the dang thing was a different animal! It was enough power i could feel it in the seat, and the throttle responce was better. The addition of the PC made it crisper from start to redline. If you are needing proof, by your parts, dyno the thing, install the parts, make a few more pulls and you'll see the numbers will have vastly improved.Hp on a bike can be felt alot more easily than in a car,So don't be shocked at the modesty of the numbers. You're not riding a 3000 pound boat anymore with 4 wheels.:)

wait a minute, everyone keeps saying go down on your front sprocket or up in the rear, I think thats so crazy, no disrespect but when I was one down in the front I thought it was awesome boy was I wrong, I used to race my best friend on his 1000 and he was a tooth down, It was always close at the start and then I would pull away, then he changed his back to normal,, I pulled him on the start a little ways then he would blow by me and proceed to walk away, I do alot of street racing , and Im running a 17f and 39 rear, granted Im not at stock horsepower but anytime we see some new people that want to race and we here what they are running for sprockets, we just laugh because they will have no top at end at all not to mention most of them cant keep the front end down.
