Greetings,

I have read several posts concerning loss of power using the K&N air filter. Not much but not as good as stock.

This true? If so an RMA number is in order pronto!

hogger...

Iv'e had one in since day one--- she still rip's. Bought it slighty used and abused --- in April 02.
I do have a question about the small airbox mod-- cutting out the floor of the airbox and 86 the flapper--- I belive i may have lost some torque down low. yes no ?

I lost power when I installed it after installing D&D slip on's. After adding the power commander it was back to slightly better than normal. I can't say what it will do without any other mods.

Do you have the small box mod with just the flapper removed or have you removed the complete bottom of the airbox (large box mod)?

If you have done the small box with a full system you will have more power ACROSS the entire RPM/Power band.

The only time you will LOOSE power below 4,000rpm with the small box mod is if you still have the OEM stock exhaust.  Any aftermarket exhaust and tuned PC combined with the small box mod has been proven over and over again to gain power from the second the throttle is opened all the way to redline....

Normally the large box mod is for a increased displacement bike.  So unless you have a 1397cc+, you really don't need anything more than a small box mod with the basic bolt-ons.

SO...is the suggestion from the board to stay with the stock air filter and NOT do the small airbox mod if a guy is just running slip-ons with no power commander???

I am glad I saw this post, as I was just putting to K&N on my b-day list for my wife and kids!!!

I am installing Devil slip-ons tomorrow, and was going to ask about the airbox mods. Yes or no??

That is a good question with Slip-ons. I have never seen/heard of that combo tested with the small box mod. You can get it dynoed with and without to see what kind of increase/decrease you get. I would think it is still improved because you have more air coming out with the slip-ons, only makes sense to get more air in.

But....the kicker is NO PC. Without that you can't really tune the bike for either mods so you are going to be up in the air on any improvements.

Do your best to get a PCIIIR if you can!

Corso1,

Just realized you are in Dayton also. Give me a shout sometime when the weather improves....

All-

FYI- I ran this past a friend of mine who is a full time bike mechanic. I guess this issue is not just on our Busas but several of the sportbike breeds. He said that unlike the older carbed machines, that many of the fuel injected bikes do worse with the K&N.

Who would of thought.

Got-Busa-

Absolutely will get with you when the weather ( If the weather ever breaks ). I am dying to get rolling.

hogger,

the main advantage of bmc(or K&N) is that its cheaper in the long run. A stock filter cost 1/2 of a BMC. But you have to REPLACE a stock filter every 11k miles. A BMC, just clean it. After 22k miles they cost the same. And at 33k miles and beyond BMC(K&N) save you money.

The BMC race is the only filter proven better than stock.

Some guys run no filter at all.

Its all up to you.

I just installed the BMC race. I have a Muzzy full system and PC3. I would rather have the tourqe on the low end then the HP on top. Should I do the small airbox mod or not?

Sorry Got-Busa-- thanks for the info----I cut out the entire bottom [large mod] Muzzy ti & PCII
With the large mod-- did i lose T. 3000-5000 rpm range--- guess it doesn't matter-- usually get it up to 6k---and have to hold on tight

i finally mustard up the balls to go back to a paper filter after 4 years, and i would have to honestly say that there was a significant difference. o.k. maybe it is psychilogical, but i can live w/ that. stick w/ o.e.m.

Yes....yes...yes!

With a FULL SYSTEM exhaust you will have improved power all the way across the REV range with a small box mod.

The only time you loose low end is if you don't have a good full system pipe and do the mod on a STOCK motor.

I'm getting two different answers here. Whats the deal?

Brock has proven this over and over again that WITH A FULL SYSTEM and a SMALL BOX MOD, you have MORE POWER from the get go ALL THE WAY TO RED LINE!

More air out (full exhaust) + more air in (small box mod) = MORE POWER EVERWHERE!
wink.gif

Like I said the only time you will loose power down LOW is if you ONLY do the small box mod and have a stock motor. With full exhaust, big bore, etc.....you will get MORE power opening up the air box...
