I dont think that it was overboard. A few months ago, a kindergarten classmate of my daughters was picking on her on the bus. Hitting, pulling hair, pinching, etc. The bus driver just ignored it so I told my daughter to defend herself and if anyone asked her why she hit the kid, tell them to call daddy. Well, she finally got tired of it and started defending herself. When she was about to get off the bus the little boy told her "The next time you're on the bus, I'm gonna have a knife." and "I'm gonna hurt you with it" Of course my daughter was scared. The next day I called the school and talked w/ the principal. They pulled the kid out of class and started questioning him. He didn't have a knife but admitted to the threats. He tried to get her in trouble for hitting him. That didn't work out so well for him.
Anyway, my point being, they've got to be paranoid about these types of things in today's society. If they weren't, I'd have a little girl who was cut or worse. Then I'd be in prison
