109 miles on 1 tank of gas?

Sometime i feel dumb asking these sort of questions cuz i cud just imagine some of you going like :banghead: who is the rookie!!

Relax! The only dumb question asked is the one you ask after you screw something up. We all had to learn so ask away!

Its my first bike so i go easy on her buttons! Cuz if i push her buttons, its scares the crap out of me!!!

Very wise to not push her buttons until you get to know and respect her.

You're a noobie, I'm a noobie, we're all noobies at some time, right? Never feel out of place here on the Org. :beerchug:

my 08 i get 112 miles before it touches the red mark on the fuel gauge, thats city. highway use get about 160 to the same mark on the fuel gauge. i see a huge difference between city and highway use.

Does the bike idle correctly, skip, spit or sputter, any kind of smoke?

Does it hesitate on acceleration, even a mild acceleration?

Have you taken the bike out to "blow the soot out of it" and if so did it do okay?

Do you have a stock set up or a 240 or 300 kit? Do you have a 2nd rider? All those things will kill you gass mileage......

112 miles to a tank??
I have an 08 and do a lot of city driving and get about 190 miles to a tank.

Not to put anyone down but the ones that are getting low milage on a tank like 112 and 109 are the ones, I am guessing, that don't know how to shift properly.

Properly? Or by the book?

Take a look at your owner's manual (page 5-4 Gen II) and you will see the most ridiculous shift numbers I have ever heard of.

If you attempted to shift at those numbers you'd slug the engine or simply stall out.

When i shift i listen to my engine, it tells me when to shift.

I have never got anywhere near below 120 miles to a tank on my 08.

on my 2007 I get 140ish when beating it up out with the guys racing, slip ons and the pair valve removed and a k-n and the small air box mod is all I got done

I get more than 100 miles out of a tank on the track. 190 miles to the fuel light coming on on the highway.

It runs absolutely fine there. Mine runs fine at just off idle in 6th gear. If you want fuel economy, that's how you've got to ride. 3rd gear at 30mph is where your fuel is going. Try 5th or 6th, downshift when you want to accelerate.

The gas milage estamater on the bike]if you read the manual] has 2 trip modes,,,make sure your reading the right one,,,you can reset them both,,,,the book says the average for that bike is 35,,i guess they take in consideration that some of those miles are going to be crusing and some hotroding and do a miture to get the average 35,,,it also says you meter ,no matter how good the gas milage is,,only goes up to 50 mpg on your trip meter,,,A few months ago I noticed that over a period of X amount miles I was getting 19 miles to the gallon,,but I recently had been running it harder than normal because of all of my recent mods..until then I hadnt ever re-set the meter because I bought the bike to enjoy and didnt care what milage it was geting,,,so A couple of months ago I did a test and reset the meters and drove it like an old lady ,changed gears at a lower rpm level and didnt exceed 55-60 mph,,just to see what the best milage I could get,,and it had when I got it home after some secoundary road trips[so it wasnt all highway miles ,,,,the meter had pegged out to 50 mpg,,,you may want to change or clean your air filter, sparkplugs and oil,,,On anything high performance that Ive ever owned, whether car, truck, motorcyle,,I always change the oil between 1,200 to 1.500 miles, When you run a motor hard you lose the vecosity of the oil breaks down faster and that means more friction which means bad gas mileage,,I only put about 2,500 miles on my bike a year anyway,,amd I am running conventional oil too,,,,,,,yeah 109 per tank, even in town means theres something wrong,,I get better than that at full throttle with NOS....I'd do the oil change, spark plugs and clean or replace the air filter,,,and the owners manuel doesnt say to run 87 in it,,Its says to run nothing lower than 87 octane,, even schnitz raceing[ryan] doesnt advise to run anything lower than 91,,,,everyone has their preference,,but I personally see a difference in 91 or higher plus theres less deposits to clog the injectors,,Personally,I like the higher ocatne myself and can honestly say that I can feel the difference in power and gas milage, and for 20 cents on the gallon ? I used to like to put in some 104 ocatne boost from autozone,,one bottle treats 3 tanks,,and you can diffently feel the extra power,,,

Are you Absolutely Kidding me, or is this how people ride? The first time I attempted to get into 3rd at 25MPH it bucked like a friggin angry mule and was hard as heck to get out of gear to down shift.
Maybe, Just Maybe, I have it all very wrong, but I have been riding for more than 35 yrs and never have I come close to those numbers on ANY bike, 250cc through 1000cc's +
These bikes were not designed as low RPM cruisers, but rather High RPM bikes.

Okay, I may just have to start a new thread on this because I need vindication, and don't need to thread jack here.

you are correct
ryan from schnitz said that suzuki had to put those numbers in,because in order for the emissions to pass to get that bike sold for the street in this country ,,they had to put those lower gear changes down,so low so when they are being checked, they pass emissions when being tested ,unquote,,I had asked the same question,,,so when that bike is being road tested and the gears are changed at the spec's in the owners maual, the bikes pass emmisions,,,,P.S I like changing at 10.500 or higher myself when im haveing fun

I lifted my tank and looked at filter right now and the previous owner had put in a k-n filter. So me being a dumbo, tried to open up the scews and baam! one of the scews got messed up while openeing it. The screw driver cant open it now cuz the star shanped top is messed up. Then i was like okay so lets put it back togather and baam! one of the screws fell somewhere deep down inside somewhere underneath the engine.

I suppose these filter are not meant to be replaced (k&n). If owner had put it in 2006, you think its time to change it or should i just leave it alone?

what a day for me. Not to mention, its my bday today :cheerleader:

Do you drive down the highway with overdrive off in your personal car? Or in manual 2nd around town? At really light throttle there isn't much reason to wind the engine out, unless you just like the sound. There isn't anything wrong with that- just realize your fuel economy is suffering. If the bike ran like crap shifting early it wouldn't be published in the manual, for starters. It's bucking because you're giving it too much throttle at low rpm. Back off the wrist a tad and it'll run smoothly.

Mine doesn't buck at all, I'm routinely in 6th in city traffic, going 35 mph. 1000 rpm is a stretch, but it can handle 1500 with no issues at all. You're riding something with 1300cc's of displacement, it can pull a tall gear without difficulty. It's not a Rebel 250! It also doesn't get rebel 250 milage, either.

newbe
find the screw,im hopeing it didnt fall into the airbox,,,and also get a phillips head screwdriver and with the palm of your right hand [if you r-handed] and stablize the srewdriver stem with the left and with your shoulder lean over the airbox and press down hard with the open palm of yourr- hand and turn the srewdriver with a good bit of firce with the left hand to get that stripped screw out of there, they are pretty short screws,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and happy b=day and welcome to the board

Iridium spark plugs will knock your mileage down somewhat, so check your plugs and make sure they're not Iridium and make sure they're gapped properly. Also check air cleaner to make sure it's clean.
You only need to use 87 Octane like BusaBret said.
Thats about all I can think of that would impact your mileage with a stock bike.
My stock 06 gets fabulous mileage..!!

You say you got 109 miles and the needle was almost touching the red on the fuel gauge. But nobody ask you how many gallons it took to fill up the tank from your fuel gauge..... It is possible your gauge reads a little different from others. Its part of learning your bike. If my needle touches the red I have about .3 gal left in the tank.

And it is possible to get 15miles on a gallon, just ask any of us that ride around in boost with a turbo.
