1st Oil change, reg, blend or full synthetic?

Ok, I am at 650 miles and ready for my first oil change, but still breaking in. I've heard to wait until 2000 miles before using a full synthetic, so I am going with a blend, at least until 2000 miles, when I service again to a full synthetic (mobile 1 probably). Is this a bad idea?
What did you guys use on your first servicing?

I did exactly what you're thinking and waited until 2K miles on my 99' before the synthetic. It made a big improvement with the occasional false nuetrals I was having between 5th and 6th. I've only had ONE false nuetral with the 00' at 1800 miles now. I'm going to wait until at least 3000 miles to go synthetic based on the information provided by other owners that indicates a very long full break-in.

I'm at 600 now, changed it at 100 and 500 miles. I'll use regular 20-50 again at 1000 then at 2000 I'll go to synthetic. Of course mobil 1.

I just noticed your note about the blend - I stayed with reg oil. I'm not sure you wouldn't have the same problem with the blend as full synth?

Thanks for the help guys, now, I've also heard not to go back to a petroleum based oil if you already went to synthetic, I'm guessing this means blend too.
So I guess I'll stick with the blend until about 3 or 4,000, then go to full synthetic....

MartinM2,

When using synthetic oils, especially AMSOIL you should wait at least several thousand miles. This is due to the nature of synthetics being so slippery that they will impede the break in process. I have close to 4K and will put AMSOIL for the first time soon. Synthetics are great, specially in resisting thermal degregation and giving you extended drain intervals.

P.S. Just remember, when you want the engine to stop wearing, use AMSOIL !

After 1K you can use full synthetic but I wait like Omega, till 2K. I like to get in that extra change for debris. No sense in spending the extra $ when changing so soon.

I used petroleum based oil for 1000 miles in my 99 ZX-9, then I switched to Honda's HP4 I think it was called. This is a synthetic blend. At 2500 miles I went to Mobil 1 MC oil. Bike had 10,000 miles when I traded for my busa and shifted better than any bike I've ridden,never even saw a trace of smoke out of the exhaust, and never had to add oil between changes. My bike was ridden very hard too.

Heres something I've been wondering about though. How much synthetic is in a synthetic blend? Couldnt the oil company just put a few drops of synthetic in a petroleum based oil and call it a blend? Does anyone know the answer to these questions?

That is a very good question:
Just what does "Blend" really mean...????

I am useing Bardahl synthetic blend motorcycle oil(10w40). It says it "combines premium petroleum and synthetic components for superior performance under severe road and race conditions". BS,BS,BS,,,,,

My guess work at "Blend" was, well heck while I break the engine in-->

1-600miles ==>Petroleum Base only
600-2000 miles ==>Petroleum / Synthetic Blend
2000 ==> Full Synthetic Mobile 1

I figured a smooth transition breakin, also a smooth transition to synthetic.....???

I don't really believe that "Blend" is 50/50 Petroleum / Synthetic...but who knows, probably a drop of "synthetic compenents"....

I just put it in tonight, and I do have to say, the engine does run quite a bit smoother and quieter, but I havn't had a chance run it hard yet.

Actually, all new corvettes, porches, and ferr"s use syn from the factory. You will void the warrenty if you use anything else. Point is---from the start they use syn. Are their motors built that much better than the 1300?

I will use premium grade of oil for 1st 2k to 3k miles then decide if I will run synt. Will have 2 or 3 oil/filter changes in by then. Bike is already the best shifting bike I ever owned and I have never had a problem with a good oil. I take it there is no problems in running synt oils in a wet clutch setup. You would think as slick as these oils are that the clutch plates would have problems hooking up. Just curious! Jack
