anyone own one or know of anyone who owns one? my buddy is lookn to buy one and im just wondering what the pro's and con's are?

I know a couple guys with older 1's, always heard good things about them and seeing how everybody loves to swap out pieces from them they have to be doing something right..... Right now though all the buzz and hype about liter bikes is that BMW

The one thing about the new(er) R1 that I don't like is the seat position. The forward tilt of the seat makes it impossible for me to be comfortable on it unless I'm in a full tuck, and I don't want to be going around everywhere in a full tuck. The thing throws my weight onto my wrists, and there is no way to hold myself with my mid section as the seat has me slammed so far forward. It starts to hurt just setting on it in the showroom. It is by far the most uncomfortable liter bike I've ever been on. To put it in perspective, the R6 is a couch in comparison. If Yamaha would flatten the seat angle out like the ZX10, CBR1k, and Gixxer 1k, it would be a definite consideration, but as it is, it's unrideable for me..

It's the heaviest and least powerful of the current liter bikes. Stock exhaust turns the bike into an oven for the rider, too.

I kinda like it. I have no experience on a 2013 but the 2012 model is outstanding. Since 2012 Yamaha put M1 tech into the R1 (the M1 is the Yamaha's superbike for Moto GP), pistons and valves are no longer 4/1 - 2/3 but now they are 1-2-3-4 also, traction control and some other cool electronics are added since this year. Without doubt, my second favorite liter bike. Right after the HP4

interesting. I didnt know they were no longer 4/1 2/3.

yea my buddy is more interested in sound and looks then power or performance. trying to steer him towards the new KTM RC8.

Yeah If he's into looks I would definitely go with the KTM RC8  Seen 1 at a local bike night last year and it was downright sexy

The local KTM dealer just got a street franchise and has gotten an RC8 in stock. Seen pictures on the dealership FB page, but haven't made it out there to look at it yet. Do look nice, think they're pretty pricey though.

Completely agree. Everyone thats been on our dyno are turds. They look cool and sound great but if you're looking for power, you're looking the wrong way

Personally , I am not a fan of the cross plane crank that was introduced 2 years ago on the R1. It makes the bike judder at low speeds in first gear to the point of becoming annoying. Also the mid is only average although the top end is fantastic. Runs extremely hot with the stock cans due to underseat placement. Also its neither as comfortable as the gsxr1000 nor as nimble as the cbr1000rr. However , With an after market exhaust it looks and sounds wonderful. TOCE and Yoshi has some great looking/sounding cans for the R1. The 07/08 were the best looking r1's IMO.

im tryn to get him to purchase the KTM or the BMW. I think he is leaning towards either one of those now.

interesting. I didnt know they were no longer 4/1 2/3.

Interesting indeed. Look at this video, it explains it (barely but simple)

As Rooster Rider007 said. Its a cross plain crank instead of a flat plane crankshaft. So no 4/1 - 2/3 for liter bikes Yamaha anymore.

The KTM RC8 it's just awfull, my vote for 1k CC bikes is for the BMW HP4 and the Yamaha R1, depends on the budget. I haven't had the chance to ride the new ZX10R but almost every motorcycle magazine, web site, video review and pretty much everything motorcycle related these days is crowning the Kawi in the 1000CC category... Even over the S1000RR and the 1199 Panigale...

Take a look at this:
a 300 km/h: Panigale, R1, ZX10R, S1000RR, Fireblade y GSXR 1000 - YouTube[/url]

Just look at the numbers, The Kawi ends first in all the tests... It's a 300km/h battle between the ZX10R, R1, GSXR 1000, 1000RR, Panigale 1199 and the S1000RR very nice. altough... I think it was a little unfair for the Suzuki, there all in Akras but the GSXR...

Our store sells Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki, so I have had the opportunity to ride all three 1000 cc bikes from them. As much as I like the R1, I too found the riding position better for me on the ZX10 and the Kawi is bad azz. If I was to buy a 1000cc today, I think the ZX10 would be the one for me. The red and black one in our showroom would look good next to my busa.
