Nice pics Vinny!! Looks like I missed out on the festivities of Fremont street. Dang, I was just too burnt out.
Anywayz, since I finally have a minute to give my side of the spring mountain story here goes:
I get up Sunday morning @ 2:45am. I wasn't able to leave town b/c my little bro borrowed my leathers for a drag racing event he raced the weekend before. So...I was stuck in Apple Valley until I could finally get my stuff.
I show up to the Best Western Pahrump Station @ 6AM and find MotoGP champ BA Busa (Rich) and Devil Dog (Vinny) loading up BA's rig. Copperone (Danny) was up and around and finally get to meet him in person. Former MotoGP champ Charlesbusa (Charles) finally comes down and we get to chatting and catching up. I haven't seen all those guys in almost a year since the SoCal ride of June 06. It was AWESOME being with the fellow Busa Brothers from the ORG. This was also a first time for me meeting Vinny and Danny. Two VERY Stand up guys!! Class acts and some of the coolest guys you'll ever meet.
6:30AM: we all get the complimentary breakfast in the front lobby. It was actually some good stuff. All freshly made stuff. They even had waffle makers with the batter for the "make the damn waffles yourselves" setup.
7AM: we all roll out the Spring mountain, pay the gate fee of $5 and setup our pit spots in the paddock area. Five EZ-ups were set up, straped down with weights and tied down together as one.
7:30: Registration and tech inspection
8:30AM: rider's meet
9AM: track opens up. A group (Advanced group) hits the track every top of the hour. B group (intermediate) every 20 past the hour. Danny, Charles, Vinny and Rich ride this group. I usually ride intermediate but b/c it was sold out, had to register for novice (C group). I get bumped up to intermediate after lunch time. C group on track every 40 min past the hour.
My experience in novice was interesting. This was my first trackday since late April, which I crashed. So that was still kinda playing with my head psyhcologically. I haven't ridden novice level in over 1 1/2 years. It definitely brought back memories of being a first time track day guy. But this time, I was way too fast for this group. I remember lapping everyone (even some riders twice). I think I was the only one on race compound tires and dragging knee. But it sure was fun passing 4 riders at a time in turns 1 and 2. And 7 riders at a time in the back straight between 7 and 8. I also "mastered" the art of spinning up the rear tire on corner exit in a controlled manner. The Michelin Power Races rock. They just took a while to get used to and I had to readjust my Compression and rebound settings on my Gixx1K b/c it felt very heavy, sticky corner entry thru mid corner. I was also getting some front end push/understeer in turn 4. After the comp/reb adjustments, it helped considerably, except 4 still had a little understeer. I believe I may have a geometry issue.
The track itself: F*&KING AWESOME!! I'd say I love it just as much as CA Speedway. It was quite a bit of a shock at first b/c I thought it was gonna be a lot more high speed than it was. I didn't have it memorized until noon time. But that's a good thing. I'm up for the challenge. I pretty much rode only 70% of my total ability the whole day. I was fatigued from the lack of sleep (I'm staying in Rump the night before an event next time) and getting used to the new race tires took some getting used to. Riding novice level didn't help much either b/c I'm used to riding with riders that are as fast or faster so my rhythm was kinda off the whole day. But nonetheless, I had a great time. Stock gearing was kinda weird for that track too!! B/c the gixxer gearing ratio in the first couple of gears are so tall, you could get away with doing the whole track without ever leaving 3rd gear! Yes, it was 2.2 miles but chock full of corners. I'll definitely be prepared next time and look forward to keeping it pinned everywhere.
The only guy riding a Busa the whole time was Vinny. But he definitely suprised the hell outta everyone. He was fast as hell for a guy on a "big, heavy busa." I'd love to see what this guy can do if he'd, ahem, setup his suspension!!
But a dedicated trackbike is in his future.
The best part of the whole trip was hangin' out with the ORG Bros!!! They're all guys that I can rely on and who will all be there to back you up anytime you need help.
I look forward to doing a track day with Rich, Vinny, Charles and DAnny!!! Miller Motorsports Park is gonna rock this september!!!
