5w30 or 10w30

If there is one thing I've learned in 33 years it's don't be afraid to ask friends stupid questions. I ride a 2006 Ltd. white busa. I have posted a couple of threads on this website and have always gotten great advice. I'm no mechanical guru and will never claim to be but I do want to seperate myself a little bit from the mechanics because of money issues. Good to learn simple stuff on your on. Anyways, do you guys suggest using 5w30 or 10w30 for the Busa? I went and picked up full synthetic Penzoil Platinum 5w30 because there wasn't any 10w30; I would have gotten that. Just wondering, does it really make a S**t? Hell, I don't know. I know the 5w30 is better apparently with the cold weather but anyways. Well, so far, noone on here has let me know I'm an idiot with these simple questions and I appreciate it, but I guess you have to start learning sometime. I can ride my ass off though, just don't know jack about mechanics. Thanks in advance fellows.

The manual recommends 10w40.
I think 5w30 and 10w30 are too light.
These bikes run hot and you want some thicker viscosity to the oil when hot.

I use 0-40W Shell Rotella T Synthetic from Walmart. 14k miles on the bike so far no issues at all. I did try a run with the amsoil but left me unimpressed for the price difference.

mike1180, thanks man. Uh, are you saying I should go and get some 20w30? Thanks,

The oil viscosity is measured in numbers.
The lower the number, the thinner the oil.
Straight 30 weight oil is thinner than 40 weight oil.
Mutigrade oils have a cold viscosity (when the motor first starst) and a warm viscosity (when the motor is hot.)
A 10w30 oil is thick like 10 when cold and then like 30 weight when it gets hot.
You want to have a multigrade oil with a 10 as the first number so the oil is thin when the motor first starts and the oil gets pumped quickly and easily throughout the motor.
The second number should be a 40 or 50 so the oil is thicker when its gets
hot (engine operating temp).
If the oil is too thin when it is hot, it won't do it's job.
Oil lubricates, cushions, cleans, cools, and several other functions.
I would say you are safe with 10w 40 or 10w50 or 15w40 or 15w50.
Check the manual. They have different recommendations for oil viscosity, depending on the ambient temperature that you operate it.
I like my oil a little thicker.
Drain hot oil and you will see it is just like water even if it is 50 weight.

I run either Rotella T 5w40 syn or Rotella T 15w40 on my bikes. I'm running Rotella 15w40 right now on my 08' it works no complains.

sounds good. Thanks a lot everyone! I have the advise I need and will adjust accoringly. I will probably end up looking for some 15w50 Silkolene or something along those lines. There is a pretty good shop called REDLINE up the street that sells those Ducati's and Aprillia's I normally have work on it. They sell all of that stuff. Thanks.

I would not use 5W-30 or 10W-30 in a Hayabusa...not enough protection. Also this
sounds like you bought a oil for a car/truck ??? most of the 30 weight full synthetics
have "Friction Modifiers" which are BAD for a motorcycle clutch (wet clutch) :rulez:

amsoil 10w40, but you will get like 20 different suggestions on the old old question.

I agree with all the not to use 5w30 10w30 too light, I'm in Missouri and temps hit 100's Virgina has to be as hot and the light oils might not hold up as well.
:welcome:

Manufacture says 10-40w, trust they didn't spend millions on R/D and not know what works best.

This is my first post so hello to everybody!!
I use 20W-50 in mine, although it sounds heavy, after 500kms it shears down to a 40wt!as all the oils in a busa or busa like engine..
i don't know, oil is so important to the engine..10W30 is marketing only for me..
