A Little Disappointed..

Well guys, I made my first trip to the track in 15 years yesterday. Well, with the mods I have, Im gonna need a lot of practice and some tips/ pointers from you guys. My best pass 12.29@123 . Short times were 2.45. 60ft. Now, to explain a bit, I thought id take it slow on the first couple runs, then on the 3rd, I gave her a bit more on the starting line. About 30-40 ft out the bike spun the tire, went sideways a bit and basically scared the **** out of me and I was a little tentative after that! I lowered the tire pressure to 20lbs after that (it was @35 and it seemed better but because of what happened on that 3rd pass, I didnt really go after it like I probably should have. I guess I just need some encouragement , to press on. Now, Ive searched here, there are dozens of posts on what rpm and stuff to leave at, but everyones got a different opinion within a wide range. Was it just the tire pressure that caused that, and if so, with a 6/7 inch stretch and lowered, can I feed it more from the get-go with the 20psi? What do you guys with a similar stretch do up there? and how does the bike react?

Just a note, I let a friend of mine give it a shot and he went 10.66@133 first time ever on a Busa with a 1.85 short time.

Thanx, ahead of time, I know you pilots can help me. :please:

Practice, just get more and more comfortable with it. The 60' time probably has the most effect on actual ET. You might be dropping too much pressure out of the tire also. The more pressure you can run in the tire will net better results (depending on mods & power to the wheel). With a stretched bike you should be able to hammer it pretty good out of the hole...once you're comfortable 1.5's & 1.6's should be easily obtainable.

I've done a lot of car drag racing and my first time on the track with a bike was my 'busa and my very first run was a 11.5 @ 125...ended up getting it down to a 10.3 @ 135 with a 1.7 60 foot after about 4 or 5 passes. Bike is stock w/ full exhaust strapped in the front and adjustable links in the back, but on the street I remove the strap and raise it back up to stock height. Stock tune as well. I was running about 20~22psi and I was told to leave the air pressure alone, didn't need to drop it. Haven't been back to the track since...maybe one day soon. :beerchug:

Im running an almost worn out battleaxe. I think the combo of no burnout and too much pressure is what bit me. I was leaving with the shifter foot up too because I was having trouble getting it back on the peg. I too have done alot of car drag racing, I cut a string of .200 lights, but like I said, 12-15 years since I did it on a bike. Also Ive only got about 1000 miles total on the Busa - since I got it.

A picture is worth a 1000 words, a video speaks for it's self. Here is a vid I made of my first run of the night, third time at the track. 07 with only slipons.

I am really working on keeping my RPMs up, buy the end of the night I got best of 10.71@129 RPM dropped to about 4k.

1iBandit...

hope the vid works

Looks like the video didn't attach... I will upload it to facebook and then try.

My bike only has slip on's and I managed to pull a 10.49 136mph with 35 lbs in my tire. My launches were terrible!

don't mean to point out the obvious, but since i was guilty of it myself, are you driving through the water?? that & no burnout would = slip & slide.

No, I went around the water. If I do a burnout, and then with the tire pressure down around 24 psi - will it hold? I know I have alot of work to do yet.

1i Bandit that vid was great ! Im just not leaving hard enough and not paying attn to the tach close enough, looks like you are leaving right around 4-5 grand and running it to redline. Come to think of it, I was shifting by ear most of the day. Theres just so much going on in such a short time ! Thanx, now what gears are you running, Im 275lbs and it sounded like the top of 3rd at the end of you vid . Stock?

I have just started going to the track. I don't do burn outs or even lower my tire pressure. I have stock height, no straps and not a good launcher. I do stay out of the water and so far my best is a 10.1 @146... The better I do in the 60 shows on the 1/4. My friend took it just the way I ride it and got a 9.8 @ 147 so I have a goal before I do any other mods. The clutch control is what my friend says is the key to the 60 foot times...you have drag it out some. Have fun and keep practicing...:beerchug:

I've got a GenII, Lowered and stretched 6.5".

Pipe and P.C, Tuned.

I'm still running a stock tire and I run 12 to 15psi at the track. I do a crappy burnout. (Still working on that)

I leave @ 7k to 7.5k rpm.

Best E.T has been a 9.35.

I've only been out on it at the track 3 times.

Post up your slip info, that will help people give you a better idea.

I wouldn't worry about tire pressure right now. Pump it up to 35lbs. or whatever you ride on the street with. You just need more practice with the basic launch before you start dropping pressure and playing with other adjustments. You should be in the 1.8's with stock wheelbase so shoot for that first since you are already stretched. That should get you down in the 10's...

Congrats on getting back out to the track on your bike... :beerchug:

Im more determined then ever now !

Dont worry about your result.
A buddy of mine was on the track with a turbo and first run was 13.xx and at the end of day he was lucky with his 11.5 ,the horses need a lot of guts.

Maybe the track was uncomfortable for you , and 3 run didnt help at all :banghead:
I started last year on a well prepared track and all i got was 10.7 one time only. Everybody wanted to help me and gave me hints do this do that..............at the result that all my runs were different between 10.7 and 11.7. and i was playing around.

Practice is all

I
I never saw somebody going to the track for the first time with a stock high short Busa hitting a 10.1 , but saw many (like me fighting the 11 ???)
Maybe they have done many passes on other bikes ,and it was first time on a busa

If your BT is worn out go to maybe 20PSI and leave it this way ,burn it , to get a better grip. Try to launch as you feel good at the beginning.
A clutch mod helps to stop bocking the bike.
And you say "ear-shifting"......maybe a lot to early. Thats what your topspeed tells. Even with a slow "roll-on" you will see the 130 with the busa.
Have a look at your tach.

I understand you well ,and i think a lot more gys here feel like you ,and are only afraid of the drag-gods  to ask whats wrong.
Theres nothing wrong ,you only need seat time ,so go to another track and try again.

And there is a big positive aspect:thumbsup: ,you will find seconds when going on ,not only tenths :beerchug: .Look this way and you will become adicted :welcome:

Thanx guys for the encouragement ! My plan is to go back on the weekend after the long weekend. I may even try to go this Fri night.
Heres one of a few slips... Im #92

How much do you weight? Also have you had your bike dynoed lately to see what kind of power it makes?

Will the bike hook at all or just spin? Can you release the clutch (get it rolling) and then go wide open throttle?

Next time out, don't try a wild launch. Just work on getting wide open throttle and hitting all the gears. Even with your weight your MPH is WAY down. If you could get it dynoed to make sure it's making the appropriate power that might help. I know you said it runs like new but if there was a problem (and it's always ran like that) then you might not know what's missing from the performance.

Even with your friend riding 133mph is WAY down. The bike should be in the 140's or high 130's with your weight. A lot of that is the bad launch but if he's pulling 1.85 60' then it should be a bit faster especially with your mods...

I forgot to change my sig, the 16t front sprocket is still on the shelf, if that helps.
