Aikido !

Aikido update:

I brought this thread outa the cellar for an update.

We are all still taking the Aikido class (Since Sept.) and CAN"T GET ENOUGH OF IT!

We train 2 nights a week now, and it's great. I highly recommend this to anyone of any age. There is a 62 year old dude in our class now, taking his 5th kyu test Wed. eve. Our <s>instructor </s> Sensei will soon be taking his 2nd Dan test (Steven Seagal is a 7th Dan by the way), and we will soon be taking our 5th kyu test. Very exciting.

I think the local newspaper will be covering the story and taking pics. (Class is being held at a local Parks and Recreation building and it's good PR I guess). If they do, I'll post 'em up.

Dang.. I always seem to have an opinion.. I hate that sometimes..

I actually have a lot I could say on the subject. I will try to refrain.

What I will say is all martial arts disciplines for the most part originated from one discipline and has since separated into the vast amount of disciplines that are now in existence. And this fracturing of the one original discipline will continue to fracture for various reasons.

Because of this I would recommend anyone interested in martial arts to study different disciplines. Train in at least 3 separate disciplines and familiarize yourself with as many as possible through reading in order to grasp the concept of each style.

With that said I guess I should clarify.

If you are interested in martial arts for ONLY physical reasons (exercise etc) then it really is not important to study more than one discipline, find the one that gives you the workout you like the best.

However if you are interested in martial arts for self defense reasons, or for curiosity in Asian culture and how fighting and martial arts seamlessly intertwine in current and ancient Asian culture then for THIS reason I would highly recommend training in at least 3 disciplines and learning the concepts of as many as possible

Just my .02 for what it is worth

Cool update. Glad to hear you are really happy with your Martial training and that you are sticking to it.

I have been a student of Hung Gar Kung Fu, a derivation of Shaolin Kung Fu. I love the stuff and train 3 nights per week and practice my forms and techniques at home almost every night that I am not at the Guan training. We specialize in the 5 animal fist forms and weapons and in the tradition of the Shaolin monks who first began Kung Fu, we train full contact. I have had one broken rib and numerous black eyes, torn a ligament in one finger, and stressed the ligament sheath in another. But, I still love it and keep coming back for more.
