Almost Went down

Been riding since 96 and had my closest call yet early this morning. I was cruising down the highway @ about 80 mph when I noticed some type of animal debris in my path, and then with no time to react I was running over either a dog or coyote carcess. I thought I was going down for sure, but suprisingly the bus soaked it up with a large jolt. I got home tonight and looked for the evidence, and well the impact splat is on my tire, wheel, the underneath, as well as the exhaust.
Out here in AZ I hear regularly reports of  motorcyclist going down on the freeway, I wonder how often its because they were unfortunate enough to hit an object that was unavoidable.

Glad you made home safe with just some soiled shorts. You dont want to hit anything at 80!

glad you're here to tell the tale. I hit a squirrel at about 90 last summer and a;most loaded my shorts RIGHT up. I cant imagine hitting a coyote...

I screamed "Sh@#" as I hit carcess...... then after I realized I was staying upright I had thoughts of giving up the bike. About half a mile later I thanked god out loud....

Good job!

A lot of people crash in those situations because they panic and either swerve into another car, or off the road or skid into a low side. You did well Grasshopper.

glad to hear your ok, I had a situation alot like that last year when I came up on a semi's tire remains laying on the interstate but was able to swerve out of the way just in time. Can't imagine what it felt like to actually hit something that big!!

Just goes to show that not freaking out and loosing it pays off. I have hit dead racoons that I didn't see until the last second. Usually if it isn't real big, most bikes will go right over. Deer are my big fear around here. I also know a guy that broadsided a bear at night. Neither survived that one. Glad you are okay.

Glad you got through everything okay. The Busa is tough, but I wouldn't want to compete with an animal regularly.

Scary stuff for sure.

Good job keeping your head about you. As previously mentioned, it's often the single difference between success and disaster.

Funny story from the past summer: me and my friend Mark were out riding one evening and there was a dead squirrel in the road. I swerved and missed it, but he managed to run it over. On the way back, I dont know what really happened, but he managed to hit the same squirrel AGAIN....

yes, it was on the wrong side of the road on the return trip. Yes, he remembered it was there. target fixation at it's best!

stuff like that your better to just hit it and TRY to keep control. a friend of mine on a cruiser tried to miss a squirrel and wound up in hospital. hes fine now and bike fixed but the squirrel lived at an expensive cost

If you stay relaxed and loose on the bike, you'll always increase your chances of survival.

My wife and I were traveling about 80 mph down the freeway one night and a car ahead of me flipped a piece of plywood off the road right into me. When I hit it, it was broadside to me. The only thing I had had time to do was tuck and ride. Fortunately, it just shattered into a million pieces and we were safely through. Must've been that cheap 1/4" ply. Still, I think we were lucky to have not had it connect with me sideways. None of the little pieces hit my wife, fortunately.
