Altering the riding position?

Last week while I was on vacation in southern OR I got a chance to sit on both a 2001 CBRXX and a 2008 Hayabusa. I've been having some problems with my right knee and couldn't get it on the peg on the Busa to ride the bike. I did sit on the XX on its centerstand and could get my right foot on the peg but the riding style is very foreign to anything I've ever ridden before and was quite uncomfortable. I guess I've never sat on or rode a sport bike. I currently ride an ST1300 that I put a Heli bar riser plate on, a KLR650, and an old 1979 GS850. If possible I would like to modify a Busa to be relatively comfortable for say a 300 mile day and try and approach the riding position of the ST. I've put in some 400-750 miles days on the ST but an XX or Busa stock looks like a painful experience. Perhaps I'm being unrealistic given the differences in these bikes? I'm thinking the modifications I would need to do would be pegs lower and more rearward, bars changed or lifted up and to the rear, and perhaps a different windshield? Has anyone attempted a complete change like this and if so how successful was it?

thanks, Pat

Very common touring modifications to the busa. A double bubble wind screen, buell pegs, heli bars, and the seat of choice you can ride all day. I like my bike stock except for the wind screen and corbin seat. Hang on a minute and I will find the peg mod for you.

here you go----------->

contact Joe and he will get your fixed up. You would be suprised what subtle changes can do for ease of comfort.

I have the HeliBars, Buell pegs and the Puig Double Bubble. Vast improvement over stock.

You can stretch the Riding position out some. I breeze through the long hauls on the Busa. I need to do more than stop for gas, but at speed I'm typically laying on the tank, well I use to  the belly gets in my way now-a-days

After all suggested mods have been done to a Busa, it STILL is and will ALWAYS be a sportbike.......and the overall ergonomics/riding position will be as such. Only way for you to know for sure is to rent/borrow a Busa modded for touring and take it for a good ride. Best of luck.
P.S. Many guys have taken the Busa on looooong trips and report doing very well with it. To a large extent, you get "used" to/adjust/adapt to the riding position and learn to live with it.

No truer statement ever made. I suffered in '06. Bought the Busa and went on a little ride with members in West Virginia Mountains, and in cold weather without the right gear. Great ride, but painful return to lower SC

I have heli-bars and .75" risers on my gen2, it's a great improvement, but not what you're comparing the Busa to. You would need Spiegler dirtbike style handlebars and topclamp, a different seat, and pegs as well to accomplish that.
There's several seats and a few customs to choose from, which is best for you is for you to find out, as they seem to be a personla preference considering how many people like which.
The Buell pegs are lower and may help your knee pain. Adjustable rearstes may or may not help, as they move the pegs around 1" up and 1" back, depending on brand. These also allow more of your ass and thigh on the seat since your leg is straighter from your feet and knees being higher. I personally find the rearsets more comfortable.
I've been trying to make my Busa more comfortable for a couple years now. The Spiegler bars are next and should be a great improvement.
BigE has them and can give you the details.

These pegs will go forward, rearward, up, down...all around. The zero gravity touring screen is what you need if you r used to a larger screen. All the double bubbles dont block nearly the air. The 1" rise on the bars is nice, much better than stock. If you lowered the rear an inch, that would be just about it for getting close to the ST, but isn't gonna be all the way there. not nearly.

Thanks to all that offered advice on this thread. I ended up going back down to Oregon and buying the Busa that I attempted to ride in August. My knee has improved and I made the following modifications: Buell pegs, 3/4" Genmar riser, and a set of Heli bars. Expensive, but well worth the money as I can ride it now in reasonable comfort. It's not an ST but I believe I should be able to put in a couple of hundred miles in a day now. Looking forward to warmer weather as when I rode it yesterday it was just a few degrees above freezing here.

Again thanks, Pat

Glad that worked out for you.
I have the Speilger bars now, and they are a great improvement even over the risers and helibars I had(which were really good).
If you ever consider them they are definately worth it, the Busa is SO comfortable now.:beerchug:

Believe it or not, SEAT TIME will cause your body to adjust to the riding postion over time. I couldn't ride mine but about a half hour at a time when I bought it. Did the mods above which helped greatly, but with seat time my muscles adjusted.

This is definately true.
However, some people's body shape or prior injuries prevent them from ever being comfortable on certain bikes without modification.
I continued to feel worse and worse, and now my Busa finally fits ME great!:beerchug:

The best news is that the hayabusa has such a vast aftermarket modification item selection. Anyone can tailor the bike for their own comfort. Great to be on such a bike.

I put Buell X9 foot pegs on my Busa.. lowered foot position one inch and all I had to do was shim the pegs as Busa ones are larger so went to local Orchard Supply and picked uo some copper tubing (4pcs) $10. and had to put one inside the other to shim down to pin size and cut to length and install. did have to do a little shaving of the peg to allow it to fit inside the mount on the bike. works great for me..less leg cramps. if anyone needs pics, email me at oneclassic_70@yahoo.com and can send to you.
