Am I ready for a Hayabusa?

TexasCop, you've got a bad case of Busa Fever! Of course you'll buy it, you'll be miserable if you don't. I sold my cruiser for my 07 18 months ago, wife's happy on the back, very comfy. The Busa is very passenger friendly.
I'd had a lot of bikes too, some I thought were very fast. I never knew what fast was til I rolled it up in second gear, and nailed it thru 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I can't think of a word to describe it correctly.
You're gonna love your Busa, it's the most awesome thing ever put on wheels!

:welcome:
sounds like you have more than enough experience to be safe on the busa.

the fact that you asked shows that you already respect the power and will have the common since to take it slow.

$9,2 sounds high for an 07. with the 09's hitting the floor I'd expect to bag an 08 for that price.

shop around and don't let the excitement dig you into a bigger hole that you need to.

I'm also an LEO and went through my Credit Union. I got pre approved for $15,000 and then started shopping.

here are some pics from the International Motorcycle Show in Chicago last weekend (2.6.09) that would make you sick if you spent $9,200 on an 07.

what part of TX are you in?

A little background. I'm a 38-year-old veteran police officer. Actually, my wife says I'm 38 going on 15, but that's for another time. Anyway, I'm up late worrying over going to the Suzuki dealership tomorrow where I plan to buy my first Hayabusa. My wife keeps questioning me on whether or not I'm ready for such a beast of a ride. Here's a brief synopsis of my riding history:

1984 - Honda Spree scooter - Okay, I know it's not a motorcycle, but when I was 14 this is where I began riding on 2 wheels. My parents bought me one and I ran that sucker clean into the ground. It died of exhaustion by the time I was 16.

1988 - Honda 400 - I don't remember too much about this bike. I got it when I was 18. It was so stinking slow that I only had it for just over a year.

1990 - Suzuki GS500E - Bought this one new when I was 20 and had just gone active duty in the Army. I loved this bike. It wasn't very fast, but hey, coming off a 400 it was a huge difference.

1993 - Suzuki GS1300E - Added this to the GS500E. It was a full sized touring bike. Wife and I loved it and about ran it into the ground.

1995 - 2000 - Moved to Dallas and wasn't comfortable riding in a major metro area.

2000 - Purchased a Suzuki Katana 750. I loved this bike, but outgrew it after a few years. Lacked the power that I wanted.

2004 - Suzuki GSXR 600 - Probably the best bike I've ever owned. I really enjoyed this bike and had tons of fun with it. VERY scary at 13k rpms! Wife complained and complained that the back seat was made for anorexic 18 year old girls....so I sold this one. :(

2006 - Honda VTX1800R - I thought this would be a good compromise, what with it being a big bore cruiser. I was very wrong. It's heavy, it's cumbersome and it doesn't perform anywhere near as well as my old Gixxer 600 did. I never did enjoy this bike. Plus, the cruiser scene really is for poseurs...not my thing.

As you can see, I've only had one reeeeeaaaallllly fast bike in the past. However, I'm a responsible rider........most of the time. Sometimes the throttle gods are cruel to me and I get on it, but very rarely. Is this the right bike for someone with the impulses to get on it from time to time? The main reason I'm purchasing this Busa is because I have determined I'm simply a sport biker, not a cruiser......plus the back seat is much larger than those of the 600/750/1000s, thus appeasing the wife.

General consensus? Am I about to end up a bug on the windshield of a semi-truck or what? :please:

i'm still looking thru your post for this "really fast bike"

Welcome to the oRg, shop around and get the best deal you can. Cant wait to see pics of the new girl. :beerchug:

Welcome to the .Org. I went from an '01 Ducati Monster to an '05 Busa, and didn't have any problems. Just respect the throttle and you'll be fine.

Don't worry about the Bike ! Remember it's all in your right wrist  ! The Busa is a purring cat if you want it to be, and a RAGING LION when needed ! Just Enjoy, it want bite, unless you act like some of those people you chase

"OH YEAH" :welcome::welcome::welcome:

Love my 07.

Be sure to send pics once you get one :rulez:

By the way, What Color is that 07 your looking at.

I'd say you are more than ready, If you & the wife plan on doing mostly touring, you may want a more fully loaded tourer (see the STN "sport touring network" ) , however don't hesitate to get a new gen2 either, your credit union may also give you a better rate on the new bike. Busa has all the snot of that 600 and then a bunch, but no way near as flat in the middle. I'm 6'2 and would not want to tour all day on the Busa, I'd lock up. 2 -3 hours no problem :-)

:welcome: I think you are more ready than most. Enjoy the ride. Get some pics up as soon as you make the purchase.

You're ready. Have fun!

Buy the Gen II!

You're ready. :welcome:

Owning the Busa is like having an InterContinental Ballistic Missle silo in your backyard. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it.

My riding progression was as follows:

'81 Yamaha QT...removed choke and ran octane booster in this moped...it was the fastest in town until a friend asked me to come over and work on his Honda Gyro.

'72 Honda CB175...p.o.s., but I was a poor, white trash kid, so it was all I could afford

'81 Yamaha 650 Special...unremarkable, except that I rode it a couple of years and sold it for more than I paid for it to help finance band equipment.

'84 Honda Nighthawk...great bike, until someone stole it. Only paid $400 for it...definitely got my money's worth from it.

Twelve year break from motorcycle ownership/riding to pursue school and a career. Rented a p.o.s. Yamaha 650 enduro in Italy while on vacation in 2007. Caught the riding bug again.

One month ago...'08 Hayabusa. Nearly 700 miles ridden to date...in Northern Kentucky/Ohio winter. Don't regret it for a second.

I haven't had a chance to scare myself yet because I've been breaking it in religously (below 5500 r.p.m. for the first 500 miles). The bike is extremely docile in the first half of the rev range...with enough torque to make it plenty of fun to ride around town and on the twisty backroads in my area...without having to flog it to death.

Be sure to post pictures when you get yours. :rulez:

Get the gen II and you'll love the way it rides and feels!!!! I got mine for 2 up crusing and it does the job well!:rulez:

I'm on my Treo, so pardon my not responding to usernames. Hard to scroll up and back.

I am in the north Dallas suburbs.

The 600 I had was an amazing machine and I really had tons of fun on her.

I bought the 07 today. They only had one 08 model, which was blue....not for me....and no 09s. And this is a good sized dealer! I got much more than fair market for my trade in as well. After negotiating, I left the dealer for a few hours to think rationally about it. I called them back and told them they had a sale. My wife and I immediately ran out and spent $500 on textile jackets!

Oh, and the credit union limited me to $12k. I have flawless credit, but they were a little antsy at all my toys (travel trailer, boat, motorcycle and the safe full of guns I can never seem to stop enjoying!) One day I might actually pay some of this stuff off. Nah, I'm helping the economy recover! :)
