I have the bike stripped down and ready to start polishing the frame. Is there any tips out there before I begin? I know it very time consuming and a tedious job. When I'm spraying the oven cleaner on there what should I use to mask the engine? I haven't cleaned to many oven's in my day but I know that harse stuff can eat thru just about anything and I don't want any mishaps. And do you guys remove the rubber pads for knee's? Should I put them back on or just toss em? Can I remove the VIN tag??

I have that great write up on the steps on sanding, wet sanding and polishing, but I'm justing wondering what you guys did for the prep work.

Hey Dewie, check out the post on pg.2of this section by BUSA173,should be some good info there. You should be ok with removing the gvrw/vin stickers. We never used the oven cleaner.

When I did my R1 years ago I simply used rubbing compound and a buffing wheel, lots of pads and lots of time. Think I ended up with about 14 hours of wheeling and polishing for the frame and swingarm. Never used oven cleaner. Don't get that stuff on the paint, or anything else.

Good buffing wheel and motor...... be patient and let the motor do the work

I would think real hard before removing the black frame sticker (VIN)

I used a DA sander to get the factory clear coat off then began sanding by hand with finer and finer grade sandpaper till I got to 1000 grit. Then I got a spray bottle with a few drops of dishsoap in it and began wet sanding till I got to 1500 grit. Then I used polishing compound on a wheel attached to a drill motor. Last I used polishing paste like Wenol to bring it to a shine.

um.. wear some old shiddy clothes you dont mind tossing out when you are done

seriously, though, take your time and make sure you get a good even surface first
