Anyone actually use 6th gear?

6th unless I'm stuck in traffic. If I get over 35mph, I will shift to 6th when not racing or just having fun.

(JuiceSC @ Aug. 29 2007,09:45) How do you guys lose traction in tripple digits? I can't even spin it much in 1st, bike just wheelies.

(on the stock rubber)
I have lost traction at high speed once. I was in tuck (weight forward), and was crossing lanes on the interstate to get away from a harrasing group of smaller sportbikes. They are like gnats buzzing around. Anyway I got tired of them trying to annoy me and I simply downshifted and nailed her and as I crossed over the lane the rear felt suddenly independent, and started to come around a bit. As soon as I finished crossing the lane it bit again and all went back to normal, but I could smell a slight burnt rubber smell. I am pretty confident it was due to the center of the lanes being the slickest part of the lane due to all the oily deposits left behind by vehicles.

I don't have any desire to do this on purpose....:-)

Interesting. I've seen guys crash on the first lap of a session on track days. Obviously a combination of cold tires and aggressive manuvers (hard on throttle or hard braking), but that doesn't sound like it in your case (cold tires). Now that I think about it, the only times I've lost traction at speed was either wet or something on the road (oil, painted lines, etc). I guess thats the main reason to ride 'smooth' no matter how fast your going.

I actually kinda like spinning the rear/fishtailing. Once your used to how that feels, its not that scary. A rainy track day is a very good teacher. This is also the reason I don't run the recommended pressures in the tires, but run slightly lower pressures.

I use 3rd mostly in town, then drop it in 6th for highway. As was said above, it seems to like to lope along in 6th at lower RPM's (2-2500), not lugging or acting unhappy at all. No chain jerk.

My Hayabusa sees mostly 1st, 3rd, and 6th...the others are a waste, and I don't spend much time at all in them. This 80 cu in 4 cyl motor really is a torque monster.

Well to each thier own. When it happens at about 130 and you aren't expecting it, it can be a little....uhh....unnerving

I use 6th often. I like to keep the 'busa tight and buzz/rattle free; this is one way to assist in longevity. I plan to keep this particular bike forever...so I'm treating it the best way I can.

I could use a 7th gear, as well...

I use 6th when cruising in light traffic. Usually it sits right at 2500 in 6th, with plenty of power available for passing. Heavier traffic I'm in 4th or 5th.

Twisty rides I'm in 3rd and 4th..between 4 and 6k rpm. With short blasts into the 8 and 9k range.

Only once did I redline it in 1st and second.. on purpose. THAT grin was hard to wipe off my face. Once I did it unintentionally, when I was POed... that one scared the crap out of me. Never ride mad

Try hitting the redline in 6th. That oughta put a real perma-grin on your face...

I usually ride in 3rd. I only commute on mine though. 40-55 mph speed limits all the way to work and back. I used 5-6th gear when I was breaking it in. If I was worried about gas mileage I wouldn't ride a 'Busa or have a car with a Hemi in it

I use 6th gear all the time about 12 seconds out of the gate.

My problem is always looking for 7th.
