well now I have done it to a point that Im ready to shot myself in the foot!!!

Last week I was changing out the oil and doin some little upkeep things. When I went to put the oil plug back in, it stripped. So I didnt the next best thing that I thought would work, Over sized drain plug.

well I finialy got my over sized plug and went to put it in today. When I did, all looked good, Felt good and seemed even better. Well hell!! I went and poured in the new oil and low and behold what do I see?

??? a freakin oil leak!!! I freak out. So I climb under the bike and what do I see.......a crack about half an inch long in the pan.

SO now I guess Im either off to find a heli-arc welding somewhere in the Fort Worth area or find some nice soul that would like to sale me a used very cheap oil pan.

Just thought I would vent a little.

Thanks for listining.

So any body got a oil pan laying around thay want to get rid of??

that sucks I wish I had one to give you. How did your trip to the Gap go?

my GOD man! How much did you tighten that bolt?

16.5 ft pounds my friend. The next purchase after the new oil pan and gasket and time to install I would recommend a torque wrench from Sears for $50.00. Going to be cheaper than that repair.

hogger...

yes..I'm yelling at you...

dude...next time?...one word..."helicoil"

ya know....mine will have a slight bit of oil every few weeks on the drain plug..... while I have the exhaust off...I am going to pull the pan ensure the threads are 100% and then install one of those EZ-Drain plugs.....to avoid that soft aluminum in the oil pan!
Two places that always meesed me up were the oild drain threads and the header bolt threads....it's very soft material in both places.

For what it's worth....you could just JB Weld that crack closed on the pan...and helicoil the threads.
The JB Weld will certainly hold up if you do it right (both inside and out).....at least long until you are ready to replace it, down the road.

try replacing the cush washer on the plug itself. 90 cents.

Very sorry for his situation.

I think the first mistake was stripping the threads. The bolt was probably cross-threaded and not over-torqued.

The crack was more likely due to the over-sized bolt he used--bad mistake, he should have probably used a heli-coil or the like.

There is nothing that JB weld will do for him. When heated the crack will more than likely get bigger and the oversized bolt will help it as well. I am afraid to say that he will be needing that oil pan.

sad sad sad.

the threads are soft....stipping them is EASY...

yup...cracked when larger bolt went in...

you may want to experiment a little more with JB weld.... as i suggested...if he would jb weld it inside and out...then helicoil it ...it would hold nicely until he had time to get a new one.
The aluminum should not expand any more once sealed....

I have been using JB weld to fill in gaps or holes during port/polish jobs...expecially on the exhaust side of suzukis....for a long time.
Since it holds up to those temps....an oil pan isn't going to move.

Yes, he does need a pan...and it sounds like NJ has plenty... so he can send me his "destroyed" one after it gets replaced.

Do you have to take the headers off to get the oil pan off? I'd take that puppy off, have the crack welded then drill and tap the drain for a larter plug. Drill and tap is the key when you oversize the plug.
