So how bad is it really to overfill your engine oil in an automobile?

Changing the oil in my '06 nissan altima and I swear the oil capacity
was 5 1/2 qts and it's 4 1/2 qts :banghead:

Is it worth getting back under there and trying to drain a qt out
or just let it ride?

:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I know it always says in big bold letters
Do Not Overfill
but I really don't understand what the bid deal is

some motors have a bigger issue with this than others.. you can actually starve a motor for oil that is too full.. oil will start to wrap around the crank and/or start to foam.. This can lead to pump cavitation..

Odds are good that you would not have a problem but IMO, I would get the extra quart of oil out of the motor just for the sake of it.. There are a couple other issues such as leaking seals, oil consumption and even burning down a cat...

Depending on the oil filter location, just buy a new oil filter and change just the filter. Wrap the one from the over fill up in saran wrapr or a plstic wrap and save it for the next oil change. A little over full is not a problem, but a quart over and you could blow a seal.

Yes that qt needs to come back out.

+1 different brands (engine designs) seem to differ in problems from none to some of the above.

I am looking at a Haynes manual right now because I have to replace a gasket on my XTerra. Too much oil = higher oil pressure= more stress on seals = pain in my azz

Hope this helps bro.
