AWESOME NEW HELMET

Saw a breakthrough helmet today and put it on.

Not a bike helmet. Bombardier SKI-DOO Concept helmet for Ski-Doos and sleds in general. New, widely available, $449 Canadian. Star Wars sh*te.

Technical innovations: Fighter pilot style soft molded rubber breathing mask, snap on/off, full mouth and nose coverage with ducted air inlet/exhaust on helmet's lower sides (no exhaled air in the semi-sealed "face compartment") . Easy release full-swing chin protector. Sturdy upper forehead pull lever that drops and retracts a dark tinted screen to serve as "instant on-off sunglasses." Very interesting radical shape (what I mean is it looks mind-blowing).

Full removeable neck sealing. Double screen visor for added fogging protection. The interior padding system is as sophisticated as a good bike helmet's. DOT approved for highway use. Beautiful finish.

I just bought a snowmobile so I'm going to get one of these helmets and also use it for winter runs on the Busa. What about wind noise? Well it'll probably be great seeing as how it's designed for use on 120 mph sleds.

I'll git back to you on this soon as the lake freezes thick enough or we get a good bed of snow.

I've been complaining about helmets for a long time. This could shut me up.

Just when I was about to trim my toenails...
any pics of the helmet?

[This message has been edited by Konrad (edited 15 December 1999).]

I got it doc. Nothing escapes me except reality. A mite crusty today?

To find you a pic I went had a go see on the net just now (Bombardier, SKIDOO) but couldn't anything quickly.

If I can't find anything I'll scan promo literature and post it...where?...furget it...I have no way to do that.

Sorry...you're on your own. Trust me it's worth a trip to your SKIDOO dealer.

It's a big breakthough in helmet design. Nothing near it in the motorcycle world yet.

MAYBE BULLDOG COULD HELP HERE.

Holy Darth Vader! Way cool -- is it DOT and/or Snell?

Cool looking hat. I wonder though, if you can take it on the chin very hard? What material is the screen made out of? How thick is it? My SA hat is a .125" thick Lexan screen. Supposedly bulletproof (I'm not willing to try!). For that matter, how about the shell? Kevlar? Plastic? I'm not trying to knock it down, just taking a more critical look is in order. Some times what looks cool is, some times not.

The snell rating is considered higher by NHRA (Min snell-90, soon to be 95). DOT rating will not pass a tech inspection (NHRA). The higher rated SA helmets are required when you start to go real fast. Simpson makes one with a constant or demand flow air supply (1K,US for total system). They don't fog, also helps keep the drivers happy during fires (mandatory, FMFC, TFFC).

Any of you guys buying a new hat, if you see a snell rating, look for the Snell-00. If you get a Snell-90, throw at the salesman's head. MINIMUM>>>Snell-95! Also, make sure it's a "M" (for motorcycle, duh)

I think it was made of thermo-plastic.The shield actually was very thick ..double pane and had an internal tinted visor you could slide down..like a fighter jocks hat.I think it would be great for winter riding..the exhaust system was very cool! All I seen on the back was a DOT sticker but I really didn`t look that hard. That black/carbon baby had Busa written all over it.Ok Turbo what can you get these for??????

Looks like it's a matter of opinion SoreHead cause I just took it out for a blast...went 170 at least and put my head up into the wind. No problem.

It IS heavier for sure by a bit and you have to exersize more control when you turn your head to the side at high speed. But that just means making bigger neck muscles. It's 33 degrees today here with high humidity and fogging was a non issue. I've never had that happen. The fighter pilot breathing mask is excellent, and makes me feel totally in charge of the in-helmet atmosphere for the first time in my life. You can really isolate your head's environment with this thing...air dams all around.

THERE IS ZERO BREEZE ON YOUR EYES.

Whack your head and get instant sunglasses? Cool. F-18 stuff.

The optics of the double visor are not as good as Shoei's single. But they are excellent nevertheless and you have to work at it to detect any distortion at all. I'm a 20/15 vision freak and I'm happy with it.

Noise? I think it's noiser but with ear plugs it'll be the same as the Shoie.

Great fit so far.

As for appearance? DEATH TO EARTHLINGS.

For me, this is the only helmet worthy of the Busa Beast.

For those who like to ride in the cold, like Viol8r (It was you who bought the snowmobile suit for riding wasn't it?), I can't say enough for it.

Yes it was me, I been riding till monday. It's now sleeting and snowing and these road commissioners out here don't get out of bed till about 5 or 6 accidents. The helmet looks cool, I could probably take the extra weight. The fog on the sheild is a pain sometimes, not always.

HEY DIRTY PETE ??? ARE YOU THE GUY THAT WAS AT A IDBA RACE DOWN IN OHIO THIS PAST SUMMER AND PITTED NEXT TO ME ???? I HAD THE INCLOSED TRAILER WITH THE GSXR ??? FRIENDS OF PICKLES ????

Thanks for finding those shots TurboTim. I'm picking mine up today.

Note that the visor curve has more of a leading edge than bike helmets do. That's to shed slush and water spray. Should work well for rain on a bike, too.

It didn't feel heavy to me and was very comfortable. Also, all the "controls" are BIG and easy to operate...a concession I suppose to the fact that sled riders wear thick gloves or even mittens.

On the impact rating subject I don't know much, but the fact is that snowmobilers are subject to impacts every bit as bad as bike riders. Rocks, trees, other sleds... If the DOT rating won't let me race, I'll just put on my trusty Shoie.

Who ever said the helmet is pure Busa material was right. To me, all other helmets are suddenly obsolete.

I'll post a little more about it when I have it in hand.

I have it. it was my first helmet. It's WAY too heavy for anything approaching more then 30 mins riding. I got a Vemar Ultra light bare Carbon helmet and the difference is incredible.
The modular one does look the part though and I sometimes use it if it's sunny for the dark visor part as it's handier and less foggy then glasses.
Also you shower that ride at speeds in excess of 100mph forget it. The vents will have your head off in no time. It suffers severely from wind. Mind you it never ever fogs up (the dark part does sometimes) so there isn't even a need to use the breather part.

Pete: sorry about the slow delay in a reply to this thread...I was out of town..

The Skidoo Modular helmet is going into it's second snowmobile season. There has been some updates, so make sure you either got the new model or the update kit has been applied to last years model.

Last year, yellow or black was available, same this year except a grey, anthracite like color was added.

The helmet is made by Laser. A decent manufacure. The helmet is $450 CDN because it's a unique patented design. Once aftermarket companies work around this and produce knock-offs the price will reduce drastically! Ride the profit wave while you can right!?

Being a snowmobiler and a motorcyclist, I would use this Modular helmet in a flash on a sled as the features are phenominal!!! No need for an electric visor with the exhaust ducting...but I would not use it on the street, I don't trust those "quick-release" chin bars, the mounting system does not look solid enough, but I would consider it over a regular open-face helmet.

Check the visor closely, USUALLY double-lens shields state they are not street-legal as they are optically poor! Where as Shoei has one of the best optically correct motorcycle shields on the market. If you get into an accident etc, this can be held against you.

Bottom line: this is one of the most radical lookings helmets on the market today and definitely complements the busa's look & style...but it was designed for the snow trails and thats where it should stay...

Note: This has been the most popular OEM helmet in history! And availability is becoming VERY limited! You might still be able to get the new grey ones in the near future...

Some times you have to dig around under the liner to find the snell tag. Funny thing, My SA hat is not DOT approved. The eye port is too small. Of course this is assuming that I use peripheral vision.
