Bad news for NY guys

A council member here in NYC is trying to get a law passed that would require motorcycles to get a EPA certification for the exhaust. It must be less than 80db to pass. The certification would be placed on the exhaust itself. Anyone without one is subject to a fine even if the bike is parked. The first fine is $1000 and the second time is $2500 and the bike will be confiscated until the owner complies. The city council will vote on it the 18th.

As far as I know, the law will be only for bikes registered in NY.

Its robbery, pure and simple. An anti noise ordinance is one thing but a law aimed at a particular segment of the population only, is discriminatory. The AMA should be aware of this.

HD guys are FOOKED I wonder if they know who they're REALLY targeting? because the majority of Sport bikes aren't THAT loud, granted their probably over 80db, but the ignorantly vast majority of offending bikes are cruisers, specifically HD where noise is ego

How in the world could an ordinary LEO determine whether an exhaust system was factory equipment or aftermarket? Would the Great City of New York law then require all manufacturers to affix certification plates to factory exhausts as well? How else would one prove compliance?

Highway patrol here would be operating outside of the law if itr passed as there Harleys would not meet the standard of this new law..
I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I guess all those bikes that Indian Larry's guys build could not even be rooled outta the shop for a test ride.
Also all those "FAT CATS" on the city council including the mayor will be forkin over some cash for all of thier "non diet" sugary drinks if that law passes.

i would guess they would do the majority during some kind of emission testing when you get your tag.

other than that it could be another "check box" for a routine traffic stop.

We dont test emmisions for bikes here.. Its a simple eye ball safty check...
As far as law enforcement, as I said Im very familiar with highway patrol here, I have been in the baracks and seen there bikes up close.. I have family on the job here..(younger brother) there own bikes would not satisfy this law.. Currently shops here do not have a way of measuring decibels, however some officers do have that instrument in the car with them that can..

I never got my bike inspected because of the ugly sticker,i'd just pay the $25 fine here in pa if ever questioned but the new fine you posted is insane!!!

The idea is for the LEO to just look for the factory markings saying EPA compliant. Or an equivalent sticker or cert. This way they don't need a sound meter.

Opens a can of worms as far as modifying the stock cans though.
