I have worked in a stainless sheet metal/fabrication/tank shop for years and accidents are easy to come by. Just don't let that guy run the hammer anymore.
That sucks alright, hope you heal soon.
Oh, and don't forget, thats Work Comp. You probably got some money coming, especially if you have any facial scarring out of the deal. I got $2000 for the scarring alone on my arm.

3 of us were installing a journal into the end of a large stainless part. Me and another guy was on either side putting pressure on the flange of the part and the journal while the third guy was hitting the end of the journal with the dead blow. He missed the end of the journal but not me!

I know what you mean. We install journals with giant sledgehammers all the time. Sometimes you have to
torch the body and press it in.

wow...I always imagined what it would be like to take one of those in the face and now you have done just that.
It's no longer imagination....
