These tips really depend on your budget and style.
If you are more casual pick up something midrange in the NIKON COOLPIX line.
The following is a great foundation for the enthusiast photographer.

I am a NIKON man so I suggest you take a look at the D40X which was recently released. Look at getting a well equipped bundle for your intended purpose/style. As far as lenses go, try to get NIKKOR "AF-S DX ED-G" glass with 1:3.5-* or lower ratio and make this your major outlay.

If you feel like trying lots of night photography and want to light up the dark in clubs, wedding/receptions or at evening barbeques as well other outdoor activities pick-up an SB600 or better speedlight.
