Hey guys, for those of you who have PM'd me in the last couple of days I have been in the throws of account maintenance - but yesterday I took a break from all things internet and attended the MSF Experieinced Rider Course.  I went and took it because:
I hadn't taken a safety course since '95
There are way to many accidents here in the PCola area
I am thinking about trying to become a Ridercoach
and
IT WAS FREE (through the base)
DOWNSIDE? It was 39 degrees!

There were three big Harleys, a Valkrie and me.  The other guys and the instructor were laughing at me, but that didn't last long....

So we start off with some easy loose slalom cones were set up at 30 feet straight, then at 20 feet, then at 18 feet with a 3 foot offset.

Then we did some box work, where you had to do 2 consecutive U turns (I am not sure why they don't just say a figure 8) first was inside 28 feet, then 24 feet - but the guy was telling us that we had to do it inside 20 feet for the eval -honestly I was nervous, because I was having trouble with the 20 feet - I think I would have gotten it eventually - but I needed more practice time than I had for the eval, that was for sure.

After that was some very tight S-turn work which was very difficult on the busa because it was all steering.

We did some 90 degree cornering stuff - then some object avoidance, increasing and decreasing radius 180 degree turns as well as clearing obsticals.  The best part was the muliptle curves oval that they set up... I was very surprised after some concentrated effort of cornering, how easily the bike leaned over - the instructor had to pull me off the oval and let me go after the harleys and Valkrie were done - just because Bessie was so smooth compared to thier big dressers.
Then we did measured braking and a few other things.

All in all, it was fun and showed me some problems that I had with my riding style, but also built my confidence in other areas... long story short, if you get the opportunity to go, my suggestion is to take it!

Definately... we can always improve on our riding skills. Like you said it, makes you aware of what you need to improve on.

Now you got me thinking rather than take the basic course again, maybe I too should hop the advance course....its been since about 199x something since I went also. Gee how time flies.

...i keep putting this off but need to get serious about it...i'm sure it would pay off at some point in time

So on the 20 foot figure-8, I'm guessing you can't touch the ground with a foot ? That would be tough ! Congrats Shawn !

does the base offer a strategic riders course after the ERC? The Air Force is make'n it F'n hard for us sport bike riders.....

Took the advance course for the 2nd time in August. I learned more the 2nd time than the first. The figure 8 gives me nightmares, but the rest of the course was cool. I never practice slow maneuvers, so it was a little tough for me. So much easier to control the 'busa caring a little more speed. Lots of fun though--hope to do it again!

The first thing I did when I got the 'Busa was take her through the paces of a basic riders course.  In the local church parking lot I set up some cones and a U-turn box and all the other tests as best I could and went to it.

MC you had it right, it was a humbling experience.  I am looking forward to taking the experienced riders course as well.  Even moreso now that I hear it can be done on a 'Busa.

Well done MC!  Thanks for the heads up!

Nice work shawn

Sorry man, no pics... I was trying to stay focused on passing the eval... I really didn't think it would be as hard for me as it was - but that box.... that stinkin' box!

I know what you mean , I took the test awhile ago with a friend (second time in 15 years) I was probly the most experienced rider and the coach used me for alot of examples . When it came down to the test I almost failed . my foot almost went down on a sharp slow turn.

Good stuff to read. I know most know but........

Use slight rear braking while doing the figure 8 or any other slow speed tight mauevering. It will make it much easier and stable.....

PS: Remember only the rear brake, hitting the front brake while doing a slow u-turn is not good.

I need to go to one of these courses. I wonder if I can get in free being US Army retired.

Congrats on taking it Shawn! I've been tossing around trying it too; hubby would like to try as well...maybe one of these days...
