If you're using saddle bags, suggest you get that clear 3M plastic film applied to the tail section. http://clear mask.com Auto specialty shops do it and it's not expensive, especially compared to new paint. The cheap alternative is to use duct tape, but that looks like crap and the adhesive can be hard to remove after it's been on the bike for awhile"

I have:

Puig Suzuki OEM Double Bubble
Buell Pegs
1 inch bar risers
New image seats
USB port for cell phone
Nelson Rigg Saddlebags and tank bag
17.5 ounce bar ends that nullify all vibration

I plan on getting an electronic cruise control eventually

I was wondering if they would rub. If it was going to be a problem, I was planning on simple masking tape since it would only be on for a week.

I'm still kind of on a student's budget, so the helibars are a bit more than I'm wanting to spend, plus the install time since I have a week to get the thing insured, registered, and prepped after sitting for two years. I'm thinking FirstGear bags, crampbuster, and the Buell pegs should be good enough for me. Maybe a tank bag.

How does everyone wire up accessories? I have a phone/GPS I wanted to mount, so I was just going to wire in a car-type outlet under the seat.

Since I haven't been to La, Ms, and Al, here's my current planned route:

Heli-bars not only raise the bars, but they also change the angle of them. They are worth the $200, especially on a ride like that. They go on in about 15 minutes too.

This! Super easy mod and worth every penny. Go to pashnit.com for your power supply needs, and your windshield, etc, etc, etc...

The helibars are tops for comfort and very easy to install, but are definitely expensive.

There are really cheap risers (sometimes sold as front end lowering kits) you can get on eBay for $20. They just raise the handlebar top triple tree with spacers and I don't really like the lack of support for this cast part, even if lots of folks do run them. You could even make a set yourself from home depot parts.

A much nicer alternative is either GenMar risers or this cheaper version from Soupy's Performance. Hayabusa Front Lowering Kit, Hayabusa Handlebar Risers, Hayabusa Comfort. I had these before the helibars and they are almost as good for comfort.

Duct tape holds up much better than masking tape for the saddlebags.

I have no ideas for you but id like to.say that first pic just became my laptop background

Hey speed, when i get home I will only be about 20 mins from you. If you need a friend that shares the same passion for what you have or just want to go for a ride, give me a shout. I should be home in the next couple of months.

I have an 08 as well, and mods for taking a trip that are a must on the gen 2 is definetly change the windscreen.

If the crampbuster(never seen one) does not affect the end of the bars then some kind of weighted bar end would be a good idea. I tripped 400 miles last summer and the vibration was enough to be more then annoyingly noticable.

Definetly get an ipod rolling with some good earbuds. A lot of people will talk against having music playing while riding but that is to long of a trip to go alone so to speak.

Pashnit (Tim) sells all kinds of things that a lot of people here take to heart because he does this for a living and always has great things to say about the products he tries out as well as comparisons to different options for the same piece. He even from time to time offers advice on budget pieces that would work for short term fixes on his forum. Go to his webpage and then find your way to his forums. I would give you the link but for whatever reason the military computer wont acknowledge his new website.

Best of luck to you and have a safe trip, make sure you post pics of your travels and keep us informed. We like to hear good stories of the road (some of us more then others because we are deprived lol)

For under the saddlebags I use tool box drawer liner. I had to cut 'em in pieces to get the coverage I wanted, but seem to do a good job.

steve good luck with the trip.

as everyone said:
buell pegs
higher wind screen
tripple tree riser
palm rest/throttlemeisters
tank bag/rear bags
radar detector
music in the helmet
gps/smart phone mount

internet on the phone to plead for help from org members if you break down :)

i'm sure you are on the preventative maintenance for pulling the bike out after 2 years too.

I have .75" risers with heli-bars and ss lines that are stock length. You don't need longer lines. If you go with taller than a .75" riser with heli-bars(I had 1.5" risers by themselves before the heli-bars with basically the same clearance as what I have now) the brake and clutch cylinders will hit the fairing and windshield.
