Sweet looking bike!
Get your son in a MSF course. Heck, take it with him (more father-son stuff).
My wife complained the same way when I got my son an SV650S. I took the MSF BRC with my son. I made sure the first (quite a few) rides were with me. I wouldn't let him ride by himself until he demonstrated respect for the bike and a keen awareness of the dangers out there.
He rides responsibly (more responsibly than me sometimes
).
Your wife will never *totally* approve of it but if you and your son show good judgement when talking bikes around her (ex. avoid the "Wow! Your wheelie was even longer than mine!") kinds of talk, you will be okay.
Good luck to you and your son. It is a great father-son activity that can last a lifetime.
