Calling all Scooby/Mitsy owners

The time has come for me to shop for another cage and I've been doing a bit of pondering. My V8 muscle cars and rear drive rotary missiles are great, I have no intention of getting rid of either, but I need a new daily driver. I'm going to be spending my next few winters in a city that gets a fair bit of freezing and has an overabundance of hills and bridges and such so I've been looking at the Japanese all wheel drive offerings. I've always been fascinated by the AWD rally cars and I admit I've always wanted one. I'm trying to rationalize a Mitsubishi or a Subaru, but I've come to an impasse between the Evo 8/9 and the STi.

This is where I'm stuck:

-I like the 6 speed in the STi. (Evo MRs are harder to find and much more expensive.)

-I think the STi is slightly better looking than the Evo. (Let's face it, neither one is going to win any beauty pageants, but that's not the point.)

-I like the DCCD in the STi more than the ACD in the Evo. (I think Mitsu blew it when they failed to put active yaw control in the US spec Evo.)

-The 4g63 in the Evo seems practically indestructible, people easily get 500+ bhp out of the factory rotating assembly. The US spec STi has cast pistons, this worries me. I wish they'd put the Cosworth 2.5 in the US model like Litchfield did with the Type 25.

-The Evo sounds better when it idles, but the STi has that delicious and evocative horizontally opposed warble when you rev it.

Who here owns and drives a turbo Suby year round? What do you think of it? Are you satisfied? What's the maintenance like? I know the Evo has had its share of reliability problems, but how does the Subaru compare?

Who drives an Evo? Have you had problems? What's the clutch like, is it really as bad as I keep hearing? Does the harsh ride bother you after the honeymoon is over?

I think I'm leaning more in the direction of the STi, but I want some more objective input. Anyone with any Mitsubishi/Subaru experience please throw some knowledge into the pot.

Heres what ive come to learn about Subies/Evo's...people who have a Subie luv them to death...from a tuning point, the money u would spend to make 500 hp on the Subie, u would have 800 on the Evo...Super Street last year, i forgot which issue named it the 2nd best engine to tune i believe, only 1 to beat it was the Toyota 2JZ...just like you said, the Evo motor is pretty much bulletproof. I see more Subie owners runnin in mud or snow than Evo drivers, the Evo has more of a tuner fell. The Evo in my opinion has more of an aggressive look. When it comes stock to stock i believe Car & Driver got it right when they said which ever one you pick you can live without the other one, it just comes down to personal preference:thumbsup:
