Hi guys. I just got my harness and smith flash unit but Im having problems getting it to connect. I have it wired right but keep getting an error. Heres a screen shot of the error message. Thanks for any help.

Key on, in neutral, kill switch in run position? Do you have to install the FTDI drivers? I have a woolich logbox (which rocks BTW) so I don't know your hardware.

Neutral, run position, com driver installed yada yada. Is there a sequence I need to do to make it work?

Go into options and make sure you have a com port selected. Also validate you have the box toggled to engine data mode.

Check everything mentioned above it all great advice.

Yep ive installed the driver, set the com port and the toggle is on engine data. I tried to check out the help site on the ecueditor website and it seems to be down.

Does your computer make the USB connect sound, chimes, "bong BONG" noise when you plug it in? ???
The logbox, I have to turn on the bike, wait about 10 seconds, then plug into the computer.
I guess the micro controller is booting and establishing comms with the ECU before it starts acting like a USB device. Are there LEDs showing power/status on the box? Wish I could help more. I was lucky and got the wiring right the first time, but those pins are a PITA.

I have not seen a light on on the smith flash unit. I didnt look to see if their was one. Im going to re install the software and try again.

No I think its the older one without lights. I reinstalled the software and installed the com driver. Then I started the program started the bike and plugged the usb in. I heard the chime saying the usb was connected so I selected new busa K8. Then I pressed connect to ecu and got the same message that theres no power or the com is not set. The same message on my first post.

I went into device manager and reset the com to com 2 and set the editor to the same. I get the same error message.

Looking at the device and it's harness, it looks like there is more room for error than the harness for the logbox. Looks like you have to hook up more wires. Since you got the chimes, the problem is between the box and the ECU I would bet. It sounds like the USB side is powered and communicating. Do you see the device in the device manager? The FTDI drivers run RS232 over USB, so it could still be the FTDI drivers.
Just keep at it. Did you buy it used? I am guessing you did. Maybe you could work out an upgrade deal?

Keep us posted.

ETA: sorry I see you answered some of my Q while I was composing. Hmmm. Flasher to ECU it is then, I would guess. The most error prone part. No offense, I've been doing these kinds of things (engineering) for 4 decades and I even occasionally screw it up.

I had the same problem originally.
I emailed Greg Smith.
He came on my computer and fixed it.
Don't ask me how.

I did a google search and found a couple of other people that had the same issue but no info on how to fix it yet.

Ive been talking to him via email. He said I could send it to him and he would check it out but I want to make sure its not a problem with my laptop first. I know someone down here with a 99 that may have a harness setup on his bike. Maybe I can try it on that. The only other thing I could think of is drag one of my desktop computers out to the shop and try it on that.

I got your text and have replied to it. Also emailed and messaged you here but looks like you're already in touch with the man (Greg Smith) himself. I just read sixpack's reply, curious if he granted Greg remote access to his computer to get kinks worked out. Best of luck.

I just talked with the guy I know here and he wasnt using ecueditor so Im out of luck there. I wish I had another laptop lying around or a 60 foot usb cable :badpc:
