Can I remove the rear tire w/out a stand

Just got a flat on the busa. The good news is that I made it off the freeway alive. The bad news is I'm a poor SOB. I have no rear stand nor a center stand. Right now paying for a good tire will put a hurting on me. I don't have the cash to pay for a stand and a new tire at the same time. Getting the bike to a dealer is also a hardship, not to mention the extra charge to remove it from the bike.
Thanks S/T.

You will have to get the rear tire off the ground, you could jack it up under the swing arm, just be careful not to tip it over.

If you have a rafter accessible somewhere like in the garage or on back patio, you can use a ratcheting strap to lift it by the grab bar.  Keep it on the kickstand but lift it just enough to get the rear off the ground.  Just be extra careful so you don't hurt yourself.  The kickstand can fold up on you real easy.  Been there done that.

If you have a 5/8" diameter rod, you can slide it thru the swingarm pivot shaft. Then have the 2 ends sticking out up on jackstands. You could get a couple of buddies to lift the back of the bike to get it on the jack stands. Or you could use blocks if ya dont have the jackstands. I would loosen up the torque on the axel first though...

BP's answer is probably the safest method. I do that to pull motors and it's pretty stable.

Thank's for the ideas. I don't have a rafter beam strong enough. The rod through the swing arm pivot looks most doable.

What about jacking it up with a floor jack using the flat bar that the bottom fairing wing mounts to? It looks very stout and is nice and flat. The fairing wing would be removed first of course.

You should be able to jack on somewhere there. I have never done it, but I'm sure you will find a spot. You only need to be a few inches off the ground.

I usually park the bike this way if not riding for a few days...takes all the weight off the rear suspension and most the weight off the front (you can still rotate the front wheel while its touching the ground). Not too mention it's extremely stable during maintenance.

Jackstands are $15-20 and the 5/8" rod a few bucks. Just prop the bike up on the rear stand, put the rod through and let down on the jackstands. Don't worry that one of the frame holes has a slightly larger diameter than the other.

Well!use a jack with you side stand.Leave your bike resting on your side stad and place the jack (with some rubber on the contact shoe)at the exhaust hose just under the oil level eye and just back of the oil bleeding screw avoiding touching the fairing, just the exhaust hose.Lifting the jack your rear weel will be rised.IF you place your jack the frontest possible just before touching the fairing(somewhere in front of the oil bleeding screw) then your bike will rise her front weel.

Thanks for all the help. Now I have a few options to work with. This is my first bike that doesn't have a center stand. I never realized how much I would miss not having a center stand until now. I'll eventualy get a good set of sport bike stands. I plan on using the spools when I get one. I will also get the swing arm lift attachment, it will make it a handy tool for the dirt bikes too.

BTW, I live in So.Ca. San Bernardino county.

Hey man, look in here, there are many ways to do this with stuff you may already have.

Good luck.

Great thread on how to lift without a rear stand!!!!

That way we'll know if any of our ideas really work!!

Doh! Then he needs to get any old beat up model...I was lucky to have a riding buddy give me his old beat up one which I use solely for putting on the jack stands. I don't do any work or run the engine w/out the security of the jack stands.

Depending on what ya did to the tire, use a can of fix-it-flat to get you to the dealer. You've already been given every option for using a floor jack. Belly pan must be removed..................

Cool! Now I have so many different ways it's a sure thing.

I will neeeever eeeeeeeever use fix a flat on a bike again! I used it once on the ZX11 and it did get me home. What it also got me was a huge mess! That crap slowly leaked out while ridding home.

It sprayed every thing with a super thick sticky goo that seemed impossible to get off. I spent many hours with lots of elbow grease and solvents trying to get it off. To this day I still have some residue in thoes hard to reach spots. The only way to get all of it would be to remove the swing arm and the rear shock.

I guess that if you had a very small leak it would work without the mess. I would rather pay for a flatbed tow than go through that nighmare again. BTW, I also found out that day that standard AAA roadside coverage won't cover towing a motorcycle.

Thanks again, I'll post the out come. S/T
