I have had a new chain for awhile now but I can't find the dmn tool to install it. Well I found a tool, but I don't wanna spend close to 100 for it. Is there any cheap alternatives.

Man, imo there is not...I tried to do the same thing, went to Lowes and bought a $20 tool that failed in the first ten minutes. There is a Pro-motion jumbo kit on sale at 58 cycle (e-bay store) for $88. Normal price is $109, not a bad deal, the kit does everything from cutting down to riveting up to 630..... or, press the side plate on with vise grips and take to the local shop to have them flare the rivets.

I just bought a Motion Pro Jumbo, haven't had the chance to use it because I haven't received the sprocket yet, but where was this post before I spent the $109.00 for it.

I was told that lesser tools would work fine for installing, but for the 530 chain, you will need to grind the pins to remove the old one, as these tools do not have the strength to press it out.

I don't know this for sure, just passing on info I was given when I asked about chain tools.

Trust me I had to look high and low to find this tool because I wasn't sure of what it was actually called. But that price is pretty standard when you add the shipping into the pic.

Also, yes you will have to do some Dremel madness to get the old chain off. Shouldn't be a problem though. I'd rather spend 30 and use a dremel than 110 and not have to.

I just couldn't see myself buying any more tools that I would 3 or 4 times for over 100 bucks.

Changed my chain last night....Well the tool leaves something to be desired but it did the trick. I was only hard because the allen wrench that it came with was pretty short and it was hard to get leverage, but all I did was cut off the curved short end and stuck it in my high torque air tool and cranked it down....i didn't think of it till one rivot was olmost done and my hand stinging from struggling with it. But for a cheap alternative It worked pretty good.

It was kinda nice because there is definately not a whole lotta room in there and the tool pretty small.

You could actually make one yourself if you a lathe.

Hope this helps

OK I realize there's alot of chain threads already, so instead of starting a new one, here's my question:

Has anyone seen or had their chain adjusted slightly too tight but still ridden  a few thousand miles on it?  By slightly, I mean that after a thousand miles or so it was closer to the proper tension.  I want to know what kind of damage this might do to the countershaft bearing where the front sprocket is.  I've been told that a tight chain can blow this bearing prematurely, even before the chain will snap.

I'm starting to worry that I may have shortened the life of my transmission by running with too tight a chain for a while, if that bearing decides to go.   And it just might do it after warranty is up.

Admins, if you think this question deserves it's own post, please let me know, I'd like as many educated replies as possible. Thanks guys.

Worst thing without a doubt is have your chain too TIGHT. Too Loose is bad but it just increases wear a little. To tight of a chain fuxors your suspension and will cause a chain to fail in a very short time.

Now then, if you've been riding for a thousand miles or so with a chain that is too tight I wouldn't sweat it too much, just set it where it should be and move on. I don't think it's going to do any permant damage to other bits.

take the bike in for a "safety check" and maybe an oil change...show up early in the AM and be sure to bring some doughnuts. While the service guy has a mouth full or your doughnut...ask him if he'd mind just throwin your new chain on for you.

Haha BusaCruise, probly not knowing these dealers around here.  And frankly I don't care if all that happens is my chain breaks.  I just don't want the tranny to go, and right now the chain is at perfect tension according to the manual.  I clean it with kerosene and wax it every 600 miles, hope it still ok.
