Chain

How many of you guys have had this happen? Do you think the chain could be damaged? This was very scary for me, didn't sound too good. I tightened her up, doesn't seem like anything was damaged. Just didn't think it would be so loose as to jump the sprocket.
Another question, with a thousand miles do you think I could swap the chain out without changing sprockets?

How many miles on your bike?
How many miles on the chain?
How many miles on the sprockets?
Is your bike stock?
What year is your bike?

Judging from your post I'm guessing you have 1000 miles on your bike. IF that is the case and it got that loose in the 1000 miles you should replace the chain and sprockets. If it was able to skip a tooth all of it is now garbage IMO. I wouldn't want it on my scoot for a high speed run! Just cause it looks OK to the eye doesn't mean it is. If it were mine I'd S can it and replace it

i dont know ? you shouldnt tighten the chain too tight , it should have some slack in it ithink the spec is .75 to 1.2 inches at the center of the chain , while you are sitting on the bike , you could cause damage if you take all the slack out . i had kinda the same feeling on my bike at around 1900 miles but it only happened in second at about 8 grand , freaked me out pretty good ! but it wasnt the chain skipping .???

Agreed 100%

Next time, check the tension on a regular basis..especially when it is new. I adjusted mine @ 120 miles, again @ 650 and one more time at 1200. None of the adjustments were big, (well, the first one was) but it is important to keep the correct tension at all times.

Once you allow that puppy to get loose enough to slip, ashcan the whole works and start all over again.

Sorry your chains not going to "skip" on the sprocket, you would shred evrything. I would look at the infamous 2nd gear issue.

Mine jumped on the front sprocket. It took the tips of several teeth off and BENT the chain. The rear may be ok, but pitch the front and get you a new chain to go with it.

The chain definitely skipped the front sprocket. I was taking off quick in 1st when it happened. I inspected the whole chain and it looks ok. What I haven't done is inspect the front sprocket. What surprised me was that it was that loose in so short a time, and actually it wasn't that loose if you know what I mean. I do check it regularly, the Busa has so much more torque than the Bandit that you have to be right on spec with the chain. I'm gonna check the front sprocket and if it looks ok I'll ride it till I can get a new chain. Just won't be doing any holeshots anymore.

Chain skip during a drag simulator run. Started with a adjusted chain. 1st run stretched the chain. The 2nd run skipped the sprocket. I caught the skip quick and let off the throttle instantly.
Inspecting the chain, had three rollers busted off, two more rollers cracked and one roller indented. The front sprocket had part of one tooth knocked off.

Learned to check the chain every run. Also lost some faith in Tsubaki Sigma chains.

Did repair the chain cause it was new. cut out links with the busted rollers. Luckily they were all adjacent links. Used the extra links had cut off a 120 length. Using two rivet master links to join up the chain.
Chain also had stretched unevenly. Had a tight and loose section. Was a happy day to finally replace it after it worn out. Now nice even chain humming along is music to the ears.
Low mileage sprocket could kept if it's not damaged from the skip.

Well I checked it all out today. Chain and sprocket are good to go. I'm still getting a ZZZ when the funds permit, I had to check it out just for peace of mind. Thank for telling me what to look for.

But how did you know the chain had jumped a tooth? Did it make a loud pop or what?
Yes it made a loud clunk noise when it caught and lurched a little. Thankfully no damage. I just wasn't paying enough attention to the chain during the initial stretch stage. Supposedly the chain will stretch quite a bit when new then taper off as it's broken in. I'll be checking it all the time now, you can bet on it.

Thanks. Now I'll know what happened if the same thing happens to me.
