changing of gen 1 crank to gen 2

worth it.will put you at around 1330? from what i hear its just a swop out. i know it is very common now. dealers are selling them here for about 1300. but a builder can get em for about 750.

Just build the bottom end per the engine manual and use 2008 main bearings . Nothing about deck height or setting the compression will be found in the Busa Shop Manual though .

It is always good to "machine shop" a new crank and have it checked for straight , cracks and have the journals micro polished if needed BEFORE ordering bearings .

This is just good practice and general common knowledge .

The piston will be higher in the bore by some .039 inch so a means of exacting the compression ratio and piston to head clearance will be needed . These come in form of base plates of varying thickness .

Get the bottom end together then mock the engine up to check deck height and if needed , custom thickness head gaskets are readily available from Cometic which can also be the source for block spacers .

Not knowing your deck height or piston set your using now , I cannot tell you what spacer"s" you need or if you might need a custom head gasket nor ,,,,, do I come here often enough to follow up on posts . There's shops selling kits that can advise and get you close.

so does the 08 use a shorter rod or a taller deck? could open the door for a long rod tall deck motor?

so does the 08 use a shorter rod or a taller deck?
Neither of the two .

Smaller diameter pin in different location in the piston than the early 63mm stroke engine . Same rod length , block height for 2.48 stroke engine and the 65mm or 2.559 stroke Gen II.

Aftermarket pistons always have had different compression heights even within the same manufacturers line so setting deck height is dependent on having the parts to be used , in hand and mocked up .

There are 08 cranks on ebay.
Check pricing with APE, Schnitz, MR Cycle, Motor Sports Super Store before bying from ebay.
I agree with ya. I have just seen the 08 cranks go for aroung $300. But there is always a risk with ebay. Just a thought to throw out there.
I don't think any have sold for that. There has been a couple of auctions ending for that amount...but not meeting reserve.

It is usually not a problem to get $300 out of a used GenI stocker.

The crank from Mr Cycles is $675ish, plus bearings!

You will also have to modify or replace the cam gear and starter gear on a 99-04(05) model. Zuk changed the spline in 05 or 06, there seems to be a discrepancy in info between real world feedback and the parts fiche. A dremal will fix it.

Ebay crank? On the proviso that it has been magnafluxed and checked by a real machine shop... To big a crap shoot IMO.. I would think it is worth a few extra bucks to deal with person or shop that can stand behind the crank..

Before e-bay, whenever we had a crank fail mag, the customer just had us throw them away. Now......They want them back as they have a place to get rid of them.

As for the 08 cranks, be sure to leave the counterbalancer in as they are a lot more out of balance then the gen 1s were.
